OLD WESTBURY, N.Y. --- (www.OLDWESTBURYPANTHERS.com) SUNY Old Westbury men's basketball closed out their home schedule Tuesday evening with a 87-63 Skyline Conference setback to the No. 17 Yeshiva University Maccabees (23-1, 15-0 Skyline) inside Clark Athletic Center. With one game left in the regular season, Old Westbury moves to a 14-10 overall and 10-5 in league play.
Prior to the opening tip, Old Westbury and Yeshiva wore Play4Kay t-shirts as part of honoring survivors in the fight against ALL cancers affecting women. All the proceeds from the shirts went to the Kay Yow Cancer Fund.
After both teams suffered a cold streak in the opening 3:04, Ryan Turell knocked down a jumper at 16:57 as Yeshiva scored 14-straight points with 11:29 remaining. Cameron Winston put Old Westbury on the board with a jumper at 10:34 to kickstart a 14-9 spurt and trim the deficit to nine, 23-14, with 3:11 left. At the 2:20 mark, Eitan Halpert drained a three-pointer to push the Maccabees' lead back up to double-digits, 26-14, before Pedro Marquez finished off a three-point play 11 seconds later to pull within nine, 26-17. Turell and Simcha Halpert combined for Yeshiva's six-unanswered points to head into the half leading, 32-17.
Bar Alluf connected from deep 32 seconds into the second-half to push Yeshiva's lead to 18-points (35-17). Old Westbury worked to slice the lead by putting together a brief 13-7 spurt from 18:36 to 14:29, headlined by Justin Alleyne-Washington and Jonathan Jamieson combining for seven points, to get in as close as 12 points, 42-30. The Maccabees then turned up the offensive intensity over the next 13:03 by outscoring the Panthers 43-28 to build a game-high 27 points, 85-58, capped by a Turell dunk. Winston headlined Old Westbury's 5-2 run in the remaining 41 seconds to settle the 87-63 final.
Jamieson finished with 15 points (6-of-10 FG, 3-of-5 3FG) and three steals to pace Old Westbury. Marquez and Winston poured in 14 and 13 points, respectively.
Turell led all scorers with 32 points (13-of-19 FG, 6-of-7 FT) and six rebounds in Yeshiva's triumph. Gabriel Leifer followed with 16 points (4-of-9 FG, 6-of-8 FT), 17 rebounds, five assists and two blocks while Halpert chipped in with 15 points (6-of-12 FG) and two steals.
In the end, Old Westbury shot 34.8 percent (23-of-66) from the field, 28.6 percent (6-of-21) from three-point territory and 57.9 percent (11-of-19) from the free-throw line. By comparison, Yeshiva connected on 58.2 percent (32-of-55) from the floor, 42.1 percent (8-of-19) from beyond the arc and 71.4 (15-of-21) from the charity stripe. Yeshiva won the boards battle, 43-27, while scoring nine second-chance points off eight offensive rebounds. Old Westbury outplayed Yeshiva in blocks (3-2), steals (10-4) and bench points (19-17). The Maccabees held the edge in assists (20-7) and points in the paint (40-26) while scoring 13 points off 13 Panther miscues. Both teams drew even in fastbreak points (18-18).
