Baseball holds off Stevens, 6-5

Old Westbury travels to Fort Myers, Florida for the Gene Cusic Collegiate Classic (Mar. 14-18)

HOBOKEN, N.J. --- (www.OLDWESTBURYPANTHERS.com) SUNY Old Westbury baseball captured a 6-5 non-conference road victory over the Stevens Institute of Technology Ducks (5-7) Wednesday afternoon from Dobbelaar Baseball Field at the DeBaun Athletic Complex in Hoboken, New Jersey. With the win, the Panthers (2-2) improve to a 13-10 mark against the Ducks dating back to the 2003 season.

Old Westbury struck first with one run scored on Duck starter Michael Frissora (ND: 5.0 IP, 7 H, 3 R, BB, 3 K) in the third inning. After struggling over 12 at bats to start the season, John Dell'Olio (3-for-5, 3 RBI, SB) entered the hit column with an RBI single to center field to score Sean Paprocki (1-for-3, 3 R) for the game's initial run.

Panther starter Eddie Guzman (ND) fired five strikeouts (tied career-high) and handed out four walks over three hitless innings to end his day.

In Old Westbury's fifth inning, a trio of one-out singles coming off the bats of Paprocki, Mike Manetta (2-for-3, 2 R, 2B) and Brandon Wilson (2-for-5, R, RBI) loaded up the bases for Dell'Olio. Dell'Olio then singled through the right side to push across Paprocki and Manetta to build the 3-0 lead and conclude Frissora's outing.

Stevens responded quickly in the bottom frame of the fifth with three runs scored on Panther reliever Matt Bohenek (W, 1-0: 3.0 IP, 2 H, 3 R, 3 BB, 3 K). With a two-out bases juiced situation, Ryan Wall (2-for-4, 4 RBI, 2B) doubled to right center to clear the bases and knot the game at three.

In a three run scored seventh by the Panthers, Paprocki and Manetta earned back-to-back walks on Duck reliever Anthony Pron (L, 0-3: 1.0 IP, 3 H, 3 R, 2 ER, 2 BB, 2 K). Wilson's run-scoring single then plated Paprocki home to give Old Westbury the lead for good (4-3) and closed out Pron's appearance. Manetta later scored the game-winning run off a throwing error by first baseman Patrick Rood before Wilson rounded home after a Peter Capel RBI groundout to second baseman Ryan Wall to build Old Westbury's three-run cushion (6-3).

The Ducks threatened Panther reliever Joshua Cruz (1.2 IP, 3 H, 2 R, BB, K) with two runs scored in the ninth. Nate Zuckerman (2 R) scored off of Tom James' (1-for-4, RBI, BB, 2B) two-out double to trim the deficit to two. Wall followed by crushing a single down the right field line to score pinch runner Chris Zickert and end Cruz's day. With pinch runner Brett Mendez sitting on first base, Shaun Kaminski's fifth pitch struck out Chris Silos to settle the 6-5 final and secure his first-career save.
