FARMINGDALE, N.Y. – SUNY Old Westbury baseball (10-3, 8-3 Skyline) swept the Mount Saint Mary College Knights (9-9, 7-8 Skyline) in a Skyline Conference doubleheader on the road by winning the opening matchup 3-1 and the second game in a 10-6 decision on Saturday.
Game 1: Old Westbury 3, Mount Saint Mary 1
The Panthers broke the scoring ice in the home half of the opening frame Knight starter Matthew Borriello (L, 2-3: 7 IP, CG, 5 H, 3 R, ER, 5 BB, K) walked
Drew Robertson while the bases were juiced that plated home
John Dell'Olio (1-for-4, 2 R) to make it a 1-0 game.
Panther starter
Tim Woodford (W, 3-0: 7 IP, CG, 6 H, R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 5 K) threw three shutout innings to start the game, but the Knights answered in the bottom of the fourth as Devin Tait (2-for-3, RBI) knocked an RBI single to right center field to knot the game at one apiece.
Old Westbury countered in the top of the sixth as
Charlie Eisele (1-for-2, RBI, BB) slapped a single to right center field that brought home
Sean Paprocki (1-for-3, R) to put the Panthers on top 2-1.
The Panthers added an insurance run to their total in the seventh on a sacrifice fly to right field by
Shaun Kaminski to bring home Dell'Olio and cap off the scoring in the 3-1 road victory.
Game 2: Old Westbury 10, Mount Saint Mary 6
The offenses came out strong in the first inning as the Panthers tallied six runs and five hits off of Knight starter Robert Brust (L, 1-2: 6 IP, 8 H, 7 R, 2 ER, 3 BB, 3 K) to start the game that featured RBI singles by Kaminski (4-for-5, 2 RBI),
Oscar Fajardo, Robertson (2-for-5, 2 R, RBI) and
Jacob Taormina (1-for-1, RBI, R, 3 BB, 3 SB) while Eisele smacked an RBI double to help pad the Panther lead.
The Knights however cut their deficit in half (6-3) in the bottom of the first as they tallied a trio of runs off of Panther starter
Patrick Quinn (ND: 1 IP, 4 H, 4 ER, 4 R, 3 BB, 3 K) that was capped off on an RBI single by Anthony Franco (2-for-5, RBI) that scored Dominick Marzigliano (2-for-3, 2 RBI, R).
In the bottom of the second inning, the Panthers brought in relief pitcher
Joe Sarni (W, 2-0: 4.1 IP, 5 H, 2 R, 2 ER, BB, 7 K) for Quinn but he surrendered a sacrifice fly to center field to bring home Steven Mirra (3-for-3, 4, R, 2 BB) to make it a 6-4 game.
In the top of the third, the Panthers capitalized on a wild pitch by Brust that allowed Robertson to score and gave the Panthers a three-run edge once again (7-4).
Although Old Westbury gave up one run in the bottom of the fourth and sixth innings, they scored a trio of runs in the top of the eighth that was highlighted by a Kaminski RBI single through the right side that scored
Jamal Ritter to make it a 10-6 game.
Justin Aviles (SV, 1: 3.2 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 ER, BB, 6 K) was lights out in relief for the Panthers as he tossed over three innings without allowing a run to secure the save and the 10-6 victory.
