PURCHASE, N.Y. – SUNY Old Westbury softball (5-13, 4-12 Skyline) went on the road for a doubleheader against the Purchase College Panthers (1-26, 1-20 Skyline) and won the Skyline Conference matchup 14-0 (5 Inn.) and the non-conference finale 6-1, respectively, on Tuesday. With the victories, Old Westbury has won five of their last six games to close out the 2021 campaign.
Game 1 (5 Inn.): Old Westbury 14, Purchase 0
Old Westbury wasted no time breaking the scoring ice in the top of the first as
Johanna Metz (1-for-4, RBI, 2 R) got on base on an error by Purchase starter Kelly Agostini (L, 1-24: 5 IP, CG, 14 H, 14 R, 5 ER, 4 BB, 3 K) that allowed
Gianna Ventiere (3-for-4, RBI, 3 R, BB) to score and give the visitors a 1-0 edge. The next batter,
Mallory Moretti (2-for-2, RBI, 2 R, BB) knocked a sacrifice fly to center field to bring home Metz and extended the Old Westbury lead to two (2-0). Later in the inning,
Lillian Chiauzzi (1-for-4, 2 RBI, R) reached on a fielder's choice that allowed
Christina Hassett (1-for-4, 3 R) to score and give Old Westbury a 3-0 cushion.
Old Westbury would erupt in the top of the third and compile a 10-run inning. The hit parade included RBI singles by
Kimberly Basile (2-for-3, 2 RBI, 2 R, BB),
Jessica Tucci (3-for-4, 2 RBI), Ventiere, Metz, Chiauzzi and
Angelina Chaves (1-for-3, RBI, BB) to give Old Westbury a comfortable 13-0 lead.
The visitors would add one more run on a Basile run scoring single up the middle in the top of the fourth inning to cap off the season-high 14-run performance.
Hassett (W, 4-12: 5 IP, CG, 2 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 2 BB, 9 K) was phenomenal in the circle and fired nine strikeouts while only walking two and allowing a pair of hits in a complete game effort to settle the 14-0 Skyline Conference road shutout victory.
Game 2: Old Westbury 6, Purchase 1
Old Westbury continued to tack on runs in the second game in the opening inning as Hassett smacked an RBI single down the left field line off of Purchase starter Agostini (L, 1-25: 7 IP, CG, 11 H, 6 R, 4 ER, BB, 4 K) that scored Metz to make it a 1-0 ballgame. Three batters later, Chiauzzi (2-for-3, 2 RBI, R) stepped up to the plate and knocked a sacrifice fly to center field that scored Hassett (3-for-4, RBI, 2 R) and doubled Old Westbury's lead (2-0).
Ventiere added another run to the visitors' total in the top of the second inning by smacking a sacrifice fly to center field that brought home
Sara Welti to give them a 3-0 edge.
Old Westbury added a pair of runs in the top of the third on a Chiauzzi RBI single to right center field and a fielder's choice hit by
Melanie Vespa that let Moretti (2-for-4) touch home and make it 5-0.
Purchase registered its first run off of Old Westbury starter Hassett (W, 5-12: 6.2 IP, 7 H, R, ER, 0 BB, 10 K) in four games in the bottom of the fourth inning when Julia Marsala (2-for-3, RBI) hit an RBI single to right field to cut the Old Westbury lead to four (5-1).
Old Westbury countered in the top of the last inning by scoring one more insurance run to conclude the scoring in the 6-1 non-conference victory.
Hassett shined in the circle against Purchase as she fired a career-high 10 strikeouts while not allowing a walk.
