The Old Westbury baseball team earned its first victories of the season with a sweep over John Jay in Monday's doubleheader. The Panthers improve to 2-7 on the season, and will open up Skyline play against Yeshiva on Tuesday.
Game One: Old Westbury 10, John Jay 4
Old Westbury scored first with a four-run first inning.
Jamal Ritter (1-for-4) led off right a triple to right center, and
Drew Robertson (2-for-3, RBI, 4 R)Â followed with a double to right field to score Ritter.
Jacob Ford (0-for-3, R) was hit by a pitch and
Jaime Barrios (4-for-4, 5 RBI, 2 R)Â later hit a triple to bring home two more runs.
Charlie Eisele (1-for-3, 2 RBI, R)Â hit a sacrifice fly to bring home the last run in the inning.
After a scoreless second inning on both sides, John Jay plated two runs in the top of the third. Massari led off for the Bloodhounds and reached on a hit by pitch, scoring on a double to left field by Agosta. A passed ball moved Agosta to third base, before a Maldonado's sacrifice fly brought the run home.
In the bottom of the third inning,
Jaime Barrios hit his second triple of the game to score Robertson who reached on an error. John Jay scored a run in the top of the fifth, before Old Westbury answered back with four runs on six hits in the bottom of the inning. Both teams each scored another run through the sixth inning.
Eddie Guzman earned the win on the mound for Old Westbury. Through four innings pitched, he allowed one earned run on five hits, with four strikeouts and a walk.
Joe Sarni earned the save, pitching three innings of relief and allowing one earned run on four hits and three strikeouts.
Game Two: Old Westbury 9, John Jay 2
Old Westbury scored the first two runs in the bottom of the second inning.
Jaime Barrios (1-for-1, RBI, 2 R) worked a lead off walk,
Wilmer Cuevas (2-for-4, RBI, R) hit an infield single, and
Aaron Castillo (0-for-1, R) walked to load the bases for the Panthers.
Jamal Ritter (1-for-4, RBI) hit an infield single to score Barrios, and a fielding error at first base allowed Cuevas to score.
John Jay answered back with two runs in the top of the third inning. After back to back walks given up by
Joseph Lubrano to start the inning, he retired the next two batters before giving up another walk. With the bases loaded and two outs, a wild pitch allowed T. Salerno to score. A walk to the next batter and another wild pitch allowed the second run of the inning before
Joshua Cruz came in for relief on the mound for the Panthers.Â
The Panthers scored another in the bottom of the third after
Jacob Ford (3-for-4, 2 R)Â led off with a double to center field, and Barrios later doubled for the RBI. Old Westbury tacked on six more runs in the bottom of the fourth inning. Castillo reached base on a walk, and
Drew Robertson hit his second home run of the season. Ford reached first on an error and Barrios walked, before Sean Kaminski (2-for-4, 2 RBI, R) and
Jacob Taormina (1-for-3, RBI, R) hit back to back doubles for three more runs. Cuevas hit a single to center field to score Taormina for the final run of the inning.
Joshua Cruz earned the win for Old Westbury, In 4.1 innings of relief, he gave up five hits and had eight strikeouts, with no walks and no runs scored.
