Pennino Siblings Face Off for First Time as Head Coaches

Old Westbury softball head coach Tom Pennino and his sister Liz Pennino encountered each other for the first time as rival head coaches in the Skyline Conference softball doubleheader against Farmingdale State College on Saturday afternoon.

Tom Pennino played collegiate baseball at NCAA Division I Stony Brook University, before playing five years of professional baseball. He started his professional career with the Evansville Otters of the Frontier League in Indiana, before playing in the Atlantic League for the Neward Bears, Bridgeport Bluefish, and the Long Island Ducks.

Liz Pennino, an All-League, All-Division, All-County, All-State, and Suffolk County Pitcher of the Year in high school, played collegiate softball at NCAA Division I Manhattan College. She is the founder and President of the Long Island Surge Fastpitch travel organization.

The Pennino siblings previously worked alongside each other as assistant coaches at Farmingdale State College for five seasons, where they were both part of two conference championships and two NCAA Division III Regional appearances. Prior to the 2020 season, Liz Pennino was promoted to head coach for the Rams, while Tom Pennino took the helm at Old Westbury.

Game One: Old Westbury 0, Farmingdale 8
Christina Hassett pitched five innings for Old Westbury, allowing five earned runs on six hits and four walks, while striking out three. Two errors in the field by the Panthers allowed for three unearned runs to score for Farmingdale.

Farmingdale opened up the scoring in the top of the first inning when a successful squeeze bunt by Jenna Giliberti scored Lyndsey Shaw, who reached on a walk to lead off the inning. In the second inning, two hit by pitches and a single loaded the base for the Rams before a fielding error on a fly ball scored all three baserunners unearned.

Old Westbury had just four baserunners through the game on two walks and two hits. Shannon Myles (1-for-2, 2B) and Gianna Ventiere (1-for-2) put together the two hits for the Panthers.

Game Two: Old Westbury 0, Farmingdale 8
Christina Hassett took the loss on the mound for the Panthers, allowing seven runs (five earned) on six hits and a walk through 2.1 innings pitched. Lilian Chiauzzi threw 2.2 innings of relief and surrendered one run and one hit.

Lyndsey Shaw homered to center field for Farmingdale on the first pitch of the game to give the Rams the early lead. Three hits, a walk, a hit by pitch, and a throwing error by Old Westbury scored six more runs for Farmingdale in the third inning.

Farmingdale's Ava Shorr pitched her first collegiate no-hitter in the second game of the doubleheader. She gave up four walks and struck out three batters.
