The Old Westbury softball team earned two conference wins in a Skyline sweep over College of Mount Saint Vincent on Friday evening. The Panthers improve to 3-17 overall, and 3-5 in conference play.
Game One: Old Westbury 6, Mt. St. Vincent 5
Mt. St. Vincent scored first with three runs in the first inning. Abigail Laurendeau led off with a single to left field and stole second base, and the next batter was hit by a pitch. Multiple passed balls and a throwing error allowed three unearned runs to score in the inning.
Old Westbury erased the deficit with three runs in the bottom of the second inning.
Morgan Albright led off with a single to center field, and
Hillary Bennett double to right field to put runners on second and third. A throwing error by the catcher in an attempt to pickoff Bennett at second base allowed Albright to score, and moved Bennett to third.
Heather Dillon put down a successful squeeze bunt to score Bennett, and an errant throw by the third baseman allowed Dillon to touch all the bases to tie the game at 3-3.
Mt. St. Vincent scored another in the third, and Old Westbury added one in the fourth before taking the lead with two more runs in the bottom of the sixth inning. The Panthers turned the first double play of the day in the sixth inning, catching two players in a rundown after a bunt single. Catcher
Madison Danin, shortstop
Alaina Reilly, and center fielder
Natalie Intrieri were all involved in the play. With the score tied 4-4 entering the bottom half of the inning, the Panthers strung together three consecutive singles by Bennett,
Jessica Tucci, and Dillon to score a run, and Tucci later scored on a passed ball.Â
The Dolphins got one run back in the seventh inning but were unable to make the comeback. With runners on second and third with one out, pitcher
Gianna DiLillo got the batter to hit a grounder to third baseman
Shannon Myles who threw out the lead runner at home to hold onto the 6-5 advantage.
DiLillo earned her second win of the season for Old Westbury. She pitched seven innings, scattering nine hits and one earned run with two strikeouts.
Game Two: Old Westbury 7, Mt. St. Vincent 2
Both teams scored a run in the first inning, and Old Westbury turned the second double play of the day in the top half. Reilly, Bennett, and Tucci turned a 6-4-3 double play to end the inning. In the bottom half, Reilly and Danin walked to reach base, and Ventiere singled to score a run.
The Panthers scored two more in the bottom of the second inning. Tucci led off with a single to center field, and
Rosanna Cuttone put down a sacrifice bunt to move the runner into scoring position. Dillon was hit by a pitch and Myles walked; a wild pitch on ball four allowed Tucci to score. A walk to Reilly and another wild pitch scored Dillon to make the score 3-1.
Old Westbury scored in all six innings of the game to hold onto the lead. Cuttone and Ventiere each had two RBI, and runs were scored by Intrieri, Reilly, Bennettt, Tucci, and Dillon. With a runner on second with one out in the top of the seventh inning, Old Westbury fittingly ended the game with their third double play of Friday's doubleheader. After a single through the left side, shortstop Reilly threw out the runner attempting to take second base, and the second baseman Bennett then threw out the runner at home.
Christina Hasset earned the win in the circle with eight hits, one earned run, and three strikeouts through seven innings.
