Baseball Earns Split Against Mount Saint Vincent

The Old Westbury baseball team split another Skyline Conference doubleheader on Monday night. The team moves to 6-15 overall, and 4-6 in conference play.

Game One: Old Westbury 5, Mount Saint Vincent 14
Mount Saint Vincent scored two runs in the top of the first inning and three runs in the top of the second to open the game. The Dolphins had three hits and two walks in each of the first two innings.

In the bottom of the second inning, Old Westbury pieced together three consecutive hits to score their first run. Shaun Kaminski (2-for-3, 2 R) and Jacob Taormina (1-for-4) each singled to right field, and Charlie Eisele (2-for-3, RBI, R) followed up with an RBI double to left field.

The Dolphins scored another run in the top of the third, before Old Westbury answered back with another run in the bottom of the inning. Jaime Barrios (2-for-3, RBI, R) worked a lead off walk and advanced to second on a ground out. After moving to third on a passed ball, Barrios scored off a single by Drew Robertson (1-for-4, RBI). The Panthers scored two more runs in the bottom of the fourth inning off hits from Eisele, Barrios, and Jacob Ford (1-for-4, RBI) and a walk to Jamal Ritter (1-for-4, R).

Mount Saint Vincent scored eight more runs through the last three innings of the game. Eddie Guzman took the loss on the mound for the Panthers. He allowed seven runs, four earned, through five innings on six hits, six walks, and four strikeouts.

Game Two: Old Westbury 7, Mount Saint Vincent 6
Jake Blinstrub (3-for-3, 2 RBI, R) started game two with a lead off walk for the visitors, and Dom Porto (1-for-5, RBI, R) followed with a triple to right field to score Blinstrub. Matt DiNorcia (0-for-3, RBI) put down a successful squeeze bunt to score Porto to take the 2-0 lead in the opening inning.

In the bottom of the first inning, Jamal Ritter (1-for-3, RBI, R) reached on a hit by pitch and Jaime Barrios (0-for-3, 2 RBI) executed a sacrifice bunt to put the runner in scoring position. Jacob Ford (2-for-4, 2 RBI) hit a single through the left side to bring home Ritter.

Mount Saint Vincent scored one run in the top of the second inning, before Old Westbury tacked on four more in the bottom of the inning. Kaminski, Schriffen, Felicetti, Ritter, and Ford each hit a single in the inning to contribute to the scoring; Barrios hit a ground out to the shortstop to score a run.

After taking a 5-3 lead in the second inning, the Panthers gave up three runs in the top of the sixth inning to go down 6-5. Three hits by the Dolphins and a fielding error allowed two unearned runs to cross the plate.

Old Westbury went ahead 7-6 with two runs scored in the bottom of the sixth inning. Kaminiski led off with an infield single to third base, and Taormina walked; the runners moved to second and third on a wild pitch. Schriffen was hit by a pitch to load the bases with zero outs. Another wild pitch allowed Kaminski to score, and left two runners in scoring position. Barrios hit a sacrifice fly to score Taormina for the second run of the inning.

With the bases loaded and no outs, Shaun Kaminski moved from third base to pitcher in relief for Old Westbury. Kaminski got the first two batters he faced to strike out looking, and the next batter grounded out to second base to get the Panthers out of trouble.

Kaminski returned to the mound in the top of the ninth inning with a chance to complete the save opportunity. Eric Zimmermann had a lead off double for Mount Saint Vincent, but the next batter grounded in a double play to the second baseman; Taormina tagged the runner advancing to second and made the throw to first. After the next batter singled, Kaminski struck out the final better to record the save.

Joshua Cruz earned the win for Old Westbury. He allowed six runs, four earned, on ten hits and two walks through six innings pitched.
