Panthers Earn Second Win of Season Against Purchase

Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania | October 14, 2023 | For the second time this fall, it was a Panther versus Panther matchup as SUNY Old Westbury met Purchase College as part of a tri-match held at Kings College in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania on Saturday, October 14.

This was a rematch of a September 26 contest that saw Purchase take the win. The result was different this time though, as SUNY Old Westbury took a 3-0 victory.

The team benefited from a well-rounded effort with Stephanie Maser leading in kills (18), Hollyanne Hansen in aces (5), Geanelle Sam in assists (12) and Jonangeliz Alvarez Rodriguez in digs (12).

In this first set, Purchase managed to edge ahead late in the contest, 20-18, before six of the next seven points went to Old Westbury to make it 24-21.

PC then responded with three straight points to extend the match, before the two sides traded points to a 26-all score. Finally, an attacking error and kill sealed the deal for the Green and White, as they emerged with the opening-set win.

The middle frame saw the SUNY Old Westbury Panthers riding high, as they began the frame with seven-straight points. A rally by Purchase resulted in a 16-15 lead for the Westchester County campus.

While there was some back-and-forth from there until a 19-all tie, the match turned for good with Old Westbury scoring the final six points to take a commanding 2-0 set lead.

In the final set, Old Westbury jumped ahead once again, only to see Purchase rally again. This time, though, Old Westbury maintained its lead throughout and eventually grabbed victory by the score of 25-21.

The Old Westbury Panthers finished with 35 kills on .063 hitting.
