Panthers rally for tie on Senior Day

Old Westbury, New York | October 25, 2023 | The SUNY Old Westbury Panther men's soccer team closed its 2023 season with a 2-2 tie in a Skyline Conference game with the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy.

The highlight of the afternoon was the pre-game celebration of the team's seven seniors.

Before a crowd of family and friends, Panther men's soccer Head Coach John Dirico and the staff of the Athletic Department celebrated the accomplishments of Billy Albrecht (West Islip, N.Y.), Cristian Garay (Huntington Station, N.Y.), Daniel Moran (Levittown, N.Y.), Erick Ortega (Bay Shore, N.Y.), Randy Parada (Freeport, N.Y.), Remberto Ramirez (Bay Shore, N.Y.) and Mike Trujillo (Brentwood, N.Y.).

Game Recap

After trailing 2-0 at halftime, the Panthers stormed back in the second half. The rally started to take shape right after halftime as Old Westbury peppered the Mariners' goal with three shots in the first 10 minutes of the second half.

The fourth shot, by Ramirez in the 58th minute, found its way home, cutting USMMA's lead in half. Then, just three minutes later, Walter Balcaceres (Farmingdale, NY) drove home the tying goal.

The remainder of the game saw Old Westbury continue to pressure the Mariners, forcing USMMA to make five more saves before the final whistle blew.

After the tie, the Panthers' record for 2023 settled at 4-9-2 overall, 2-7-2 in conference.
