Baseball Comes From Behind Twice in Skyline Sweep Over USMMA

The Old Westbury baseball team earned two Skyline Conference wins in comeback fashion on Saturday afternoon.

Game One: Old Westbury 8, USMMA 7

How it Happened

USMMA scored first in the top of the second inning off a solo home run by Ernest Darling. Old Westbury responded with two runs in the bottom half of the inning. Oscar Fajardo led off the second inning with a double, and Nick Papageorge walked before Barrios doubled to right center field to score both runs.

The Mariners tacked on six runs in the top of the third inning off four hits, two walks, a hit by pitch, and an error. In the bottom of the third, Nick Papageorge hit an RBI double to trail 7-3. The Panthers added two runs in the fifth inning off a solo homerun by Jamal Ritter and Jacob Taormina later scored on a throwing error. In the sixth inning, Fajardo hit an RBI single to score Taormina.

Old Westbury entered the bottom of the seventh inning behind 7-6. Jaime Barrios led off with a single up the middle, Aaron Castillo entered as a pinch hitter and reached on a bunt single, and Troy Emmanuel singled to load the bases. Ritter worked a walk to tie the game, and Taormina was hit by a pitch for the walk-off win, 8-7.

Game Two: Old Westbury 5, USMMA 3

How it Happened

USMMA got on the scoreboard with three runs in the third inning off a two-run homerun and a solo shot. Old Westbury earned two runs back in the bottom of the fourth. Jacob Taormina and John Dell'Olio led off with back-to-back doubles. Oscar Fajardo hit a groundout RBI, and Jaime Barrios later singled up the middle to score Dell'Olio.

The Panthers tied the game 3-3 in the fifth inning. Jamal Ritter walked and stole second. Dell'Olio singled up the middle to score Ritter. The game remained tie until the eighth inning; Fajardo led off the inning with a walk and Nick Papageorge homered to give Old Westbury the lead 5-3.

  • John Dell'Olio went 3-for-4 with a triple, an RBI, and a run scored.
  • Nick Papageorge hit the game winning two-run homerun.
  • Greg Vivenzio pitched seven innings, allowing three runs on six hits with four strikeouts.
  • Justin Aramini earned the win with two scoreless innings pitched in the eighth and ninth to close out the game.
