Baseball Splits with Mount Saint Mary

The Old Westbury baseball team split a Skyline Conference doubleheader against Mount Saint Mary on Saturday afternoon. Old Westbury moves to 11-14 overall, and 5-5 in conference play.

Game One: Old Westbury 10, Mount Saint Mary 2

How it Happened

Old Westbury opened the game with five runs in the top of the first inning. Jamal Ritter worked a lead off walk, and John Dell'Olio hit a triple to bring Ritter home. Nick Papageorge hit an infield single to third base to score Dell'Olio. Jaime Barrios doubled to left field to score Papageorge, and Michael Petrucelly followed with a single to center field to score Barrios. Troy Emmanuel singled to shortstop, and a throwing error allowed Petrucelly to cross the plate.

Mount Saint Mary scored one run in the bottom of the first inning, before the Panthers added three more runs in the third. Nick Papageorge led off the inning with a double. Petrucelly and Emmanuel walked to load the bases. With the bases loaded, Jamal Ritter walked to score a run. Jacob Taormina singled to right field to score two runs.

A sacrifice fly scored a run in the fifth inning for the Knights, and Old Westbury scored two more in the sixth. Fajardo, Papageorge, and Barrios hit consecutive singles to score a run. Dominic Felicetti later singled up the middle to score Papageorge.


Justin Aviles pitched a complete game for Old Westbury and threw five scoreless innings.


Top Performers

  • Nick Papageorge went 4-for-4 with a double, RBI, and three runs scored.
  • Jaime Barrios with 2-for-4 with a double, two RBI, and a run scored.
  • Jacob Taormina went 2-for-4 with two RBI and a stolen base.
  • John Dell'Olio went 2-for-5 with a triple, RBI, a run scored, and a stolen base.
  • Jamal Ritter went 2-for-3 with a RBI, a run scored, and a stolen base.
  • Dominic Felicetti went 2-for-4 with an RBI.
  • Justin Aviles earned the win on the mound with seven innings pitched. He allowed two runs on seven hits with eight strikeouts.

Game Two: Old Westbury 5, Mount Saint Mary 8

How it Happened

Old Westbury got on the scoreboard with a run in the top of the second inning. Nick Papageorge singled down the right field line and moved to second on a ground ball. Michael Petrucelly hit an infield single to third base to put runners at the corners. Charlie Eisele singled to left field to score Papageorge.

Both teams then went scoreless until the fifth inning, when Mount Saint Mary took the lead with a two-run home run. Old Westbury answered back with two runs in the top of the sixth inning to retake the lead 3-2. Jamal Ritter led off the inning with a solo home run. Jacob Taormina doubled to right center and tagged up to move to third on a fly ball. Oscar Fajardo singled to left field to score the run.

Mount Saint Mary went ahead again in the bottom of the seventh inning to lead 6-3. The Knights scored four runs on five hits, including a solo home run, and an error.

Old Westbury shortened the lead with two runs in the eighth inning, to trail by one. Jamie Barrios hit into a fielder's choice with the bases loaded to score Taormina, and Dell'Olio scored on the play after a throwing error.

Mount Saint Mary scored two more insurance runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to hold the lead 8-5 for the final score.
