Softball Takes Two Against St. Joseph's Long Island

The Old Westbury softball team earned two conference wins against St. Joseph's Long Island on Saturday afternoon. Old Westbury improves to 11-15 overall, and 9-7 in the Skyline Conference.

Game One: Old Westbury 11, St. Joseph's 2

How it Happened

Old Westbury scored first in the bottom of the first inning. Natalie Intrieri reached on a bunt single, and move to second base on a sacrifice bunt from Gianna DiLillo. Alaina Reilly hit a double to center field to score Intrieri. The Panthers added another in the second inning when Julia Pastrana scored on a single by Intrieri.

St. Joseph's tied the game 2-2 with two runs in the top of the third inning off of three singles. Old Westbury took the lead with nine runs scored in the bottom of the fifth inning. The nine runs came by way of three hits, four walks, and a hit by pitch. Madison Danin hit a walk-off two-run home run to close out the mercy rule victory.

How it Happened

St. Joseph's opened the game with two runs in each of the first two innings to take the early 4-0 lead. Old Westbury got one run back in the bottom of the second inning. Hillary Bennett walked,  Jenna Gaspa singled, and Angelina Fernandez hit a sacrifice fly to score the run.

St. Joseph's added another three runs in the top of the fifth inning, before Old Westbury put up seven runs in the bottom half of the inning. Trailing 7-1, the Panthers worked six consecutive walks along with two hits in the inning to take the lead 8-7. With two outs, Jessica Tucci hit a two RBI single to center field to score the last two runs of the inning and take the lead.

The Golden Eagles tied the game in the top of the seventh inning and would force the game into extra innings. Tylyn LeSane walked with two outs in the bottom of the eighth inning, and Ava Hoffman hit a walk-off double for the win.
