Men's Basketball Overpowered by Yeshiva University Down the Stretch on Sunday

OLD WESTBURY, NY – The SUNY Old Westbury men's basketball team fell short against the Yeshiva University Maccabees on Saturday by a final score of 80-70.

The Panthers kept it close throughout the game and came up just short in the end. In total, there were five lead changes in this one.

Jordan Johnson-Rader got things going first with a layup. The Panthers and Maccabees then traded baskets for several minutes with neither team really pulling away. Around the 12-minute mark, the Maccabees found themselves up by eight points after Zevi Samet hit a three-pointer.

The Maccabees held onto their lead, but the Panthers stayed in the fight. The Maccabees went into halftime with a 10-point advantage with a score of 40-30.

The first points out of the break came from a pull-up three-pointer from OW's Jamari Williams who cut the Panthers' deficit to seven points. Yeshiva responded back quick with a couple three-pointers of their own and they soon found themselves ahead by 19 points.

With just over 10 minutes remaining in the game, the Panthers brought the game back to a close one with YU ahead by 10 points. The Panthers put together some strong possessions and brought the game to within just two possessions thanks to a Amadi Lee-Kane three-pointer, a pair of free-throws from Emmanuel Lemba and an old-fashioned three-point play from Lee-Kane.

Despite combating the Maccabees' lead, the Panthers committed several costly turnovers down the stretch and the Maccabees capitalized. The Maccabees would hold on and finish strong to defeat the Panthers by a final score of 80-70.

For the Panthers, Amadi Lee-Kane had one of his strongest showings of the season. Lee-Kane finished the game's leading scorer with 34 points, three rebounds, five assists, and a steal. Another big contributor for OW was Jamari Williams. He finished the day with a double-double consisting of 15 points and 11 rebounds. Chris Smith recorded seven points, six boards and a steal. Jordan Johnson-Rader, who received a commemorative ball recognizing his 500 career points before the game, was a force defensively recording three steals, and eight rebounds.

As for the Maccabees, their leading scorer was Zevi Samet. He finished the game with 29 points, three rebounds, and five assists. Another big time performer for YU was Dothan Bardichev who had 15 points, nine rebounds, and a steal. Roy Itcovichi recorded 13 points, seven rebounds, and four assists.

The Panthers shot the ball better from behind-the-arc, shooting 39 percent from three while the Maccabees shot 37.8 percent from three-point range.

Despite their efforts, the Panthers fell short in yet another Skyline Conference matchup. The Panthers will prepare for another one as the team is set to ravel to Sarah Lawrence College on Tuesday, January 30. The game will tip-off at 6pm.
