Women’s Volleyball Falls to Maritime in Hard Fought Battle on Wednesday Night

OLD WESTBURY, N.Y. – The SUNY Old Westbury women's volleyball team fought hard until the end on Wednesday night against the Privateers of Maritime College. The Privateers came out on top, 3-2. 
 
Old Westbury now falls to 4-12 on the campaign and has a conference record of 1-6. 
 
Maritime controlled the first set from the start as they found themselves ahead, 3-0. The Privateers went on a six-point run to put themselves ahead by a large margin late in the opening set. The Privateers took the first set, 25-20. OW recorded eight kills as a team in the first set. 
 
In the second set, it was an eight-point run by Maritime that set them apart. Maritime held a 14-7 lead that led them to the set victory. The Privateers would take the second set by a final score of 25-22. Despite falling in the second set, the Panthers tied the Privateers in kills as each side had eight. 
 
The third set was where Old Westbury shifted the momentum. The set was back-and-forth the whole way until an eight-point rally from the Panthers that put them ahead 23-18 on the scoreboard. The Panthers were able to close out and take the third set thanks to two crucial kills one by Nicole Zugnoni and one from Kayla Vallejo. OW took the third set, 25-20.  
 
In a must-win fourth set, the Panthers came to play. The Panthers saw serval small scoring runs that would come together to help give them the win. Ultimately, Stephanie Maser had two crucial kills to give them the victory. The Panthers took the fourth set by a final score of 25-17. The Panthers offensive attack was showcased as the team finished with 14 total kills in the fourth set. 
 
 In the fifth set, the Panthers found themselves down big from the start. Maritime possessed a 6-2 lead. After an OW timeout, the team was able to bounce back and go on a five-point run to tie the game at 9-9. Unfortunately, after a couple service errors by the Panthers, Maritime would take the fifth and final set by a score of 15-13. 
 
Stephanie Maser led the match in kills as she finished with 16. Maser also had three aces, and 14 digs. Stephanie Velez had a very strong night as she finished with 10 kills, and nine digs. First-year Nicole Zugnoni had eight kills and three blocks. 
 
Up front, Mya Murphy recorded four blocks. Geanelle Sam recorded two aces, three blocks, and 23 assists.
 
Next up, the Panthers will travel and face off against USMMA on Saturday, October 26 at 11 AM.
