Women’s Basketball Suffers Close Defeat in Final Moments Against Purchase on Saturday

The SUNY Old Westbury women’s basketball team fell to the Panthers of Purchase College on Saturday by a score of 66-65.

OLD WESTURY, N.Y. – The SUNY Old Westbury women's basketball team fell to the Panthers of Purchase College on Saturday by a score of 66-65. 
 
Old Westbury now falls to 0-10 on the season with a Skyline Conference record of 0-6. 
 
The Panthers of Old Westbury came out to a fast start as they found themselves ahead 6-0 with 7:49 to play in the first quarter thanks to two layups from Jailah Pineda and a down-low layup from Sakhmet Lewis


Purchase managed to close the gap and secure the lead with a little over four minutes to play in the quarter. OW fought back to even the score but it was Purchase who took a two-point advantage going into the second quarter.
 
In the second quarter, Old Westbury found themselves down big as Purchase grabbed a 12-point lead with just over four minutes to go in the half. OW fought hard to close the gap and managed to make it a nine-point game at the half. Purchase led, 34-25. 
 
The second half was filled with excitement. It opened with an offensive surge from Purchase as they found a 14-point lead. The Panthers of Old Westbury went on a run led by Pineda and Malaura Olivier who each had two layups. 
 
OW evened the score with 2:40 left in the third quarter. Purchase answered right back and finished the quarter ahead by four with a 47-44 lead. 


Purchase maintained the lead and carried their six-point advantage until the six-minute mark. 
 
Old Westbury came to within one possession when Pineda hit a floater in the paint with 2:41 to play before she gave the team the lead a few moments later thanks to another jumper. 
 
Two crucial free-throws by Olivier gave the Panthers of Old Westbury a two-point advantage but PC answered right back with a layup of their own. Both sides were tied at the end of regulation by a score of 58-58. 
 
The overtime period opened with raining three-pointers from both sides. Purchase hit theirs just seven seconds into the game followed by Olivier for OW. 
 
Purchase went on an offensive run spearheaded by a fastbreak layup. Pineda cashed in on two free-throws to give the team a shot, making int a one possession game. Pineda made it a one score game with just under two minutes on the clock. 
 
After a tough in-and-out shot by Pineda with 0.7 seconds left, the Panthers of Old Westbury fell to the Panthers of Purchase by a final score of 66-65. 
 
Old Westbury shot the ball 29 percent from the floor, 14 percent from behind-the-arc and 77 percent from the free-throw line. Old Westbury committed 16 turnovers. 
 
Jailah Pineda had a standout performance as she dominated with 30 points, nine rebounds, seven assists, and four steals. Malaura Olivier also had an impressive day as she led the team in rebounding with 24 boards, 13 points, two blocks and two steals. Sakhmet Lewis recorded a double-double as she had 13 points and 13 rebounds, going 1-3 from three-point range. 
 
Next up, the Panthers will prepare to face off against Wagner College on Monday, December 30 at 2 PM. Following that, the team will open the new year on the road against York on January 3.
