Men's Basketball Picks Up Another Win on Senior Night Against the United States Merchant Marine Academy

OLD WESTBURY, NY – The SUNY Old Westbury men's basketball team was victorious against the Mariners of the United States Merchant Marine Academy on senior night. The final score was 65-50. 
 
The Panthers struggled in the first half but coming out of the break, the team managed to put together an impressive scoring run to comeback and emerge as the victors. 
 
The game got going with a jumper from Chris Smith in the opening moments. From there, the two sides traded baskets back-and-forth. The Mariners found themselves with the game's first two possesion lead as Drew Zalescik went 1-2 from the free-throw line. 
 
The Mariners remained out in front and found themselves with their largest lead of the half, 14 points, with two and a half minutes remaining in the first half. The Panthers managed to cut the gap to just nine points thanks to Amadi Lee-Kane's pull-up jumper. The Mariners went into the break with the lead and a score of 31-20. 
 
Coming out of the break, the Panthers were hot offensively. Smith led the charge and scored the Panthers first points of the second half. THe Panthers offense picked things up and started to move the ball and score effectively. With 14:35 remaining in the game, the Panthers brought the game to even as Smith drained another pair from the line. 
 
From there, the Panthers really began to turn up the heat as Smith and Lee-Kane combined to score nine straight unanswered points. Old Westbury found themselves with their largest lead of the night, a 13 point cushion with 90 seconds to go. 
 
Jamari Williams hit a pair from the free-throw lines in the final minute to put the Panthers up by 15 points. The Panthers walked away with the win on senior night by a final score of 65-50. 
 
Throughout the night, Amadi Lee-Kane led the way in scoring for both teams with 27 points. Lee-Kane also recorded seven rebounds and a steal. Chris Smith impressed in the second half. Smith finished the night with 13 points, three rebounds, four assists, and five steals. Jordan Johnson-Rader finished with a double-double consisting of 10 points, and 11 rebounds. 
 
As a team, the Panthers shot the ball 40 percent from the floor and struggled from deep shooting just 10 percent from three-point range. The team shot 71 percent from the free-throw line. 
 
For the Mariners, Drew Zalescik was the leading scorer. He finished the night with 20 points, 14 rebounds, and four steals. Bryce Bristow finished the game with 12 points, and seven rebounds. DeMarcus Spivey recorded 11 points, two rebounds, two assists and a steal on the night. 
 
The Mariners shot 34 percent from the floor and 14 percent from behind-the-arc. The Mariners shot 61 percent from the charity stripe. 
 
This victory hands the Panthers their second win on the year as they have now won two of the last three games. OW will play their final game of the season at home on Saturday, Feb. 17 against Farmingdale State College. The game will tip off at 12 pm in the Clark Center Gymnasium.
