Men's Volleyball Falls to the Pratt Institute and Brooklyn College on Saturday Afternoon

OLD WESTBURY, NY - The SUNY Old Westbury men's volleyball team hosted the Cannoneers of the Pratt Institute and the Bulldogs of Brooklyn College for another non-conference tri-match. The Panthers were unsuccessful in both matches. Old Westbury fell to Pratt in three sets and to Brooklyn in five sets.

Match One: SUNY Old Westbury (0) vs Pratt Institute (3)

The first match of Saturday's tri-match was controlled by the Cannoneers. The Panthers came out of the gates slow and struggled to find their rhythm. OW could not connect on several serving attempts and committed a costly eight errors in the first set.

The Cannoneers recorded 12 kills compared to the Panthers' eight. The final score at the end of set number one was 25-14.

Going into the second set, the Panthers continued to struggle as their own mistakes helped to push Pratt. OW recorded another five errors in the second set. The Panthers saw their worst scoring results of the day in this set as they just barely broke double-digits. The final score of the second set was 25-10.

In the final set of the match, the Panthers only managed to finish with three kills compared to the Cannoneers' 11. Despite their efforts, the Panthers lost the third set, 25-16.

Anthony Moyett led the way for OW as he finished the match with seven kills and 14 digs. Val Holmes continued to play well as he finished the match, leading the team in blocks with two. Holmes also had an ace.

Match Three: SUNY Old Westbury (2) vs Brooklyn College (3)

In the tri-match's final match, the Panthers went up against the Bulldogs. This match was a good battle throughout allowing both sides to showcase their talents and abilities.
Old Westbury stepped up their play from the first match of the day. In the first set of this match, the Panthers managed to record seven kills as a team compared to Brooklyn's six.  Both the Panthers and the Bulldogs committed six errors as a team in the first set. It would be the Bulldogs who came out on top in the first set by a final score of 25-19.

In the second set, the Panthers played some of their best volleyball in the program's young history. While committing four errors and only notching four kills, the Panthers still found a way to take down the Bulldogs to give them their first set victory of the 2024 campaign. The Panthers took set number two by a score of 25-16.

Set number three featured a strong fight from both sides. Brooklyn recorded 10 errors but managed to finish with 15 kills. The Panthers only found themselves with five kills. The high scoring set finished in favor of Brooklyn with a score of 25-20.

The fourth set was controlled by the Panthers for essentially the entire way. Old Westbury recorded 10 kills as a team and no errors. In what might be the team's best set in program history, the team made new history by winning a second set under new Head Coach Ryan Pastuch. The team only won one set last season. The Panthers took the fourth set by score of 25-15.

In the deciding set to 15 points, the Clark Center Gymnasium was filled with energy. Brooklyn amassed seven kills while the Panthers had six. In another close set, the Bulldogs edged the Panthers, winning 15-11. The Bulldogs won the match three sets to two.

All things considered, the Panthers improvements did not go unnoticed. Old Westbury was led once again by Anthony Moyett. He finished the match with 22 digs, 12 kills, one ace and a block. Thomas Albrecht and Ashel Santos led the way in aces, finishing with two each. For another time, Val Holmes led the team in blocks with four. Kosta Anagnostou also had a strong day with two blocks and 21 set assists.

In the end, it was a positive day for the Panthers. The team will remain at home as they get set to host the Lions of Nassau Community College on Wednesday night, Feb. 28 in the Clark Center Gymnasium. The first set will begin at around 6 PM.
