Softball Defeats Baruch on Tuesday Night

OLD WESTBURY, N.Y. – The SUNY Old Westbury softball team picked up another win on Tuesday night against the Bearcats of Baruch College by a final score of 5-3.

With this non-conference victory, the Panthers advance to 12-6 on the season.

The Panthers started the scoring early as Madison Danin continued her strong offensive play with an RBI single to right field, scoring Natalie Intrieri who led off with a single of her own. Danin's hit put the Panthers up 1-0 at the end of the first inning.

In the second inning, the Panthers tacked on another run thanks to a Hillary Bennett sacrifice fly to left field allowing Madison Muehling to score.

The score remained 2-0 in favor of OW for some time.

Baruch put together a strong rally in the top of the fifth inning to tie the game off a two RBI double to left field.

With the score now tied, the Panthers base running helped them jump ahead once again. Both Amanda Varela and Phylicia Cangemi entered the game as pinch runners in the bottom of the fifth inning. After a double steal and an error by Baruch, both Varela and Cangemi scored to grow the Panthers' lead to 4-2.

Later in the same inning, Gianna DiLillo had a sacrifice hit to score another run from Tylyn LeSane (who also pinch ran).

Trailing 5-2, the Bearcats put together a small rally to score a run in the top of the seventh inning off an RBI single down the right field line.

Despite the late push by Baruch, Old Westbury held on and walked away victorious by a final score of 5-3.

Alaina Reilly had another strong day going 2-3 at the dish with a double. Phylica Cangemi, Amanda Varela and Tylyn LeSane each scored runs as pinch runners. Madison Danin went 2-3 with an RBI and continues to shine at the plate. Another top performer was Madison Muehling who went 2-3 at the plate, scoring a run.

Christina Ravo got the start for the Panthers. Ravo went 3.2 innings and faced 17 batters. Ravo allowed only two hits and struck out a batter. In relief, Hailey Ragozine went 3.1 innings and allowed seven hits, and three runs. Ragozine faced 18 batters and struck out five of them.

Next up for the Panthers is a conference doubleheader against the Bears of St. Joseph's University-Brooklyn. The game will take place at the Jackie Robinson Athletic Complex on Friday, April 19. The first game will begin at around 4 PM.
