Baseball Splits Doubleheader with St. Joseph's-Long Island on Monday; Manetta Tosses Complete Game Shutout In His First Start

OLD WESTBURY, N.Y. – The SUNY Old Westbury baseball team split a conference doubleheader on Monday against the St. Joseph's University-Long Island Golden Eagles.

The Panthers won the first game in low-scoring fashion by a score of 3-0. The second game went the way of the Golden Eagles as they won 9-7.

Old Westbury now has an overall record of 13-14, and a conference record of 8-6.

Game One – SUNY Old Westbury (3) - St. Joseph's University-Long Island (0)

The first game of the afternoon began with three scoreless innings.

The Panthers were the first to break the deadlock in the bottom of the third scoring one run courtesy of a Golden Eagle error.

Old Westbury added two more runs in the bottom of the fourth. The first was courtesy of Mike Petrucelly who hit into a fielder's choice situation. This was Petrucelly's 28th RBI of the season. The second run of the inning came by way of a Mateo Martinez RBI single.

Those runs would be the last of the game as both teams struggled at the plate. The Panthers held on to take game one of the series by a final score of 3-0.

At the dish, Jaime Barrios, Jacob Taormina, and Mateo Martinez picked up hits. Martinez had an RBI as well.

Rob Manetta made his first start of the season on the mound for Old Westbury and pitched a complete game shutout. Manetta threw all seven innings recording six strikeouts and only allowing three hits. This was Manetta's second win of the season.

Game Two – SUNY Old Westbury (7) - St. Joseph's University of Long Island (9)

Old Westbury came out the gates swinging in game two scoring six unanswered runs in the first three innings.

The first inning had two runs come by way of two walks for Old Westbury.

In the bottom of the third, the Panthers got four runs on two singles by Zachary Horowitz and Brian McCloskey.

The Golden Eagles would respond with a big fourth inning, scoring five runs of their own. They would score three more runs in the top of the sixth, which put the score at 8-6 in favor of SJLI.

The Panthers cut the lead to just one in the seventh thanks to a Mike Petrucelly sacrifice fly, giving him a team-leading 29th RBI on the season.

Unfortunately for Old Westbury, the Golden Eagles added an insurance run in the seventh inning. The Panthers could not rally back and the Golden Eagles took the second game by a final score of 9-8.

It was a strong offensive performance for the Panthers, who saw four hitters with multi-hit games. Jacob Taormina, Jaime Barrios, Rob Manetta and Nick Papageorge each picked up two hits and had runs. Zachary Horowitz, who started at catcher had an impressive game. Horowitz went 1-3 with two RBIs and a run.

It was a great day overall for Manetta who, after throwing a complete game shutout, had two hits, two runs and two walks in the second game of the doubleheader.

The reigning rookie of the week, James Sill made a relief appearance on the mound after starting the game as the designated hitter. Sill pitched 3.2 innings and allowed only four hits and a run. The Long Island native struck out four batters.

Next up, the Panthers will travel to take on the Rams of Farmingdale State College in a Skyline Conference doubleheader. The action will begin at 12 PM on Saturday, April 27. Following that, OW will return home on Sunday, April 28 to play their final regular season home game of the year.
