Baseball Downed By Manhattanville Twice on Senior Day

OLD WESTBURY, N.Y. – The SUNY Old Westbury baseball team was overtaken by the Valiants of Manhattanville University on Saturday as the team lost both sides of a conference doubleheader. The final scores were 7-0 and 14-1, respectively.

Game One- SUNY Old Westbury (0) – Manhattanville (7)

The Panthers struggled to hit the ball effectively against Manhattanville's pitching. The Panthers only managed to record five hits as a team throughout the game.
 
Manhattanville scored their first run of the game in the top of the second inning on a sacrifice fly.
 
The Valiants held on to their 1-0 lead until the fourth inning when they opened things up by scoring five more runs.
 
The Valiants scoring continued in the top of the fifth inning when they launched a homer over the left field fence.
 
The Panthers had no response in the sixth or seventh inning. Manhattanville took the first game of the day by a final score of 7-0.
 
Jacob Taormina, Jaime Barrios and Joe Morreale each had a hit in the early bill. Mateo Martinez was the only Panthers' hitter to have a multi-hit game with two hits.
 
Rob Manetta got the start and pitched five innings. Manetta allowed eight hits, two earned runs, and seven runs. Manetta faced 25 batters and struck out three. In relief Jon Jordan Ford pitched the last two innings. Ford struck out two of the seven batters he faced.
 
Game Two- SUNY Old Westbury (1) – Manhattanville (14) [Seven Innings]

The Panthers struggles continued throughout the day's second game. Once again as a team, the Panthers combined for only five hits.
Manhattanville scored a run in the top of the first inning to kick things off.

From there, the Panthers responded with a run of their own thanks to an RBI double from Rob Manetta to score Jaime Barrios for the Panthers' lone run of the day.
 
Manhatanville scored three runs in the top of the third inning.
 
From there the Valiants' scoring push continued as the team put up four runs in the top of the fourth inning, followed by two runs in the fifth.
 
Old Westbury had no response and could not answer the Manhattanville run.
 
The Valiants sent the game into a mercy rule in the top of the seventh inning by scoring four runs to take the victory in seven innings. Manhattanville won the second game by a final score of 14-1.

Jaime Barrios, Nick Papageorge and Louis Peluso (pinch hit) each finished the game with a hit. Rob Manetta had the best game at the plate for OW as he went 2-3 with a double and an RBI.

Kenneth Dow got the start on the mound. Dow faced 19 batters and allowed five earned runs and five hits. Dow struck out four batters. Michael Pokorny also made a notable relief appearance, allowing three hits and two earned runs.

With these losses, the Panthers fall to 14-17 on the year. The team has a conference record of 9-9.
 
Next up, the Panthers are scheduled to travel to take on the United States Merchant Marine Academy on Sunday, May 5 at 3 PM on the road to close out the regular season with a Skyline Conference doubleheader.
