Softball Concludes Impressive 2024 Season Finishing Second in the Skyline Conference Championship

FARMINGDALE, N.Y. – The No. 5 SUNY Old Westbury softball team was defeated by the No. 2 Valiants of Manhattanville University in the Skyline Conference Softball Championship on Saturday. The final score was 10-1.
 
The Panthers finished the Skyline Conference Softball Championship Tournament in second place after eliminating No. 4 Mount Saint Mary, No. 3 St. Joseph's-University-Brooklyn, and No. 1 Farmingdale State College along the way. The Panthers entered the year ranked sixth in the conference's pre-season polls.
 
SUNY Old Westbury (1) – Manhattanville (10) [Five Innings]

The Panthers were the designated home team due to the tournament's format. Manhattanville got things going early as they scored three runs off an inside the park home run.
 
In the bottom of the first inning, the Panthers found a way to get two base runners on. Madison Danin drew a walk while Natalie Intrieri singled to the shortstop. Unfortunately, the Panthers were unable to capitalize.
 
In the top of the second, Manhattanville would score another run off an RBI triple. The Valiants led 4-0.
 
Hillary Bennett singled down the right field line for the Panthers in the bottom of the second, but Old Westbury stranded the base runner once again.
 
Manhattanville had another big inning in the top of the third as they scored three runs on two hits and an error.
 
Madison Danin found a hit through the right side in the bottom of the third for the Panthers. Despite this, at the end of the third inning, the score was 7-0 in favor of the Valiants.
 
The Valiants would score another run off an RBI ingle through the left side to go up 8-0.
 
With the pressure on Old Westbury to score quickly, Manhattanville's pitcher struck out three batters in a row.
 
The Valiants offensive power continued as they scored another two runs in the top of the fifth inning to grow their lead to 10-0. Manhattanville capitalized on their two hits in the inning.
 
With their backs against the wall, facing a mercy rule ending, the Panthers came to bat. Gianna DiLillo singled and then advanced to second on a throwing error. Alaina Reilly would then ground out but moved DiLillo in to scoring position. DiLillo scored the Panthers lone run on a wild pitch.
 
The Valiants would come out on top by a final score of 10-1 to advance to the DIII Softball NCAA Tournament.
 
For the Panthers, Madison Danin continued to showcase her skills at the plate with a hit and a walk. Natalie Intrieri and Hillary Bennett also picked up hits against the Valiants. Gianna DiLillo finished the game with one hit and one run.
 
Layla Ramos got the start for the Panthers and faced 22 batters going three innings. Ramos allowed eight hits and five earned runs. Julia Pastrana entered the game in relief and allowed only two hits and two earned runs. Pastrana struck out one of the nine batters she faced.
 
The Panthers finished the 2024 season with an overall record of 24-14. The team went 13-8 against the rest of the Skyline Conference. This was the first time in program history where the team advanced to the double elimination tournament as well as their first appearance in the championship game. On their journey to the championship game, they eliminated the No. 1, No. 3, and No. 4 seeded teams. The team is excited about the future and will look to continue their successes next year.
