Softball Sweeps Mount Saint Vincent Under the Lights on Thursday to Secure a 2024 Post Season Berth

 
OLD WESTBURY, N.Y. – The SUNY Old Westbury softball team took both games against the Dolphins of the University of Mount Saint Vincent on Thursday night. Both games ended early due to the run rule with final scores of 12-4 and 9-1, respectively. 
 
With these two wins, the Panthers advance to 19-10 on the campaign and 9-5 against the Skyline Conference. 
 
Game One- SUNY Old Westbury (12) – Mount Saint Vincent (4) [Six Innings]
 
Despite playing on their home field, the Panthers were the designated away team in this one. 
 
The two sides went at it for a few innings before the first runs would be scored. It would be the Panthers who struck first by putting up six runs in the top of the third inning. 
 
Alaina Reilly had an RBI single to center field that would score Hillary Bennett. In the following at-bat, Ashley Pierce had a nice RBI single to score Natalie Intrieri. As the Panthers moved through the heart of their batting order, Madison Danin connected on a two RBI single through the left side allowing both Ashley Pierce and Reilly to score. 
 
Amanda Varela would enter the game as a pinch runner and scored thanks to an impressive infield single from Gianna DiLillo. Taylor Murphy bunted and got on base and thanks to some impressive baserunning, DiLillo would score. 
 
Despite going up 6-0, the Panthers allowed the Dolphins to respond in the bottom of the third inning. UMSV combined for three hits and three runs to close the gap to 6-3 in favor of OW. 
 
Neither side would score in the fourth, but it would be Old Westbury who had another strong inning in the top of the fifth. 
 
To kick off the fifth inning scoring, the Dolphins' pitcher threw two wild pitch to advance and score Madison Muehling, Gianna Ventiere, and then Angelina Fernandez. Intrieri would single to left field to drive in Fernandez for an RBI. Reilly closed the fifth inning scoring with another RBI double. 
 
The Panthers exited the fifth inning with a 10-4 lead. 
 
Old Westbury tacked on two more runs in the topo of the sixth inning thanks to an infield single from Muehling and a throwing error by UMSV that would score both DiLillo and Danin.
 
The Panthers took the first game in six innings by a final score of 12-4. 
 
Natalie Intrieri had a great first game as she went 3-3 with an RBI and two runs. Alaina Reilly continued her dominating play with two hits, two RBIs and a run. Madison Danin also had a good game for the Panthers as she went 2-3 with two RBIs and a run. 
 
Gianna DiLillo went 2-4 at the dish with an RBI and two runs. The first-year, Madison Muehling continues to shine behind the plate and as a hitter. Muehling finished with two hits, two RBIs and a run. 
 
In the circle, Layla Ramos notched her tenth win of the season. Ramos allowed seven hits and four runs. Ramos finished with two strikeouts. 
 
Game Two- SUNY Old Westbury (9) – Mount Saint Vincent (1) [Five Innings]
 
The scoring in game two got going in the top of the first inning for the Panthers as Ashley Pierce hit an RBI single to right center to score Natalie Intrieri. Madison Danin then grounded out, allowing Ashley Pierce to score. 
 
With a 2-0 lead, the Panthers continued to build their lead in the second inning when pinch runner, Heather Dillon scored off a ground out by Intrieri. The highlight of the inning was Ashley Pierce's three-run homer over the left field fence. 
 
Old Westbury held a 6-0 lead through the middle of the second inning. 
 
UMSV scored one run in the bottom of the second as it would be their only run of the game. 
 
In the top of the fourth, Danin hit an RBI single to left field, allowing Reilly to score. The Panthers closed the inning just one run shy of the eight-run mercy rule. 
 
OW took care of things, scoring another run in the top of the fifth thanks to an RBI single from Reilly to score Cangemi. 
 
UMSV couldn't score in the bottom of the fifth. The Panthers took the second game victory in five innings by a final score of 9-1. This win clinched a playoff berth for Old Westbury. 
 
Ashley Pierce had an impressive outing, going 3-4 with four RBIs and three runs. Madison Danin picked up two more hits and two RBIs. Angelina Fernandez went 2-3 at the dish in the late game of the day, Phylicia Cangemi, who started in left field, went 1-3 with two runs. 

 
Julia Pastrana got the start. Pastrana allowed only one run and eight hits. The veteran pitcher struck out three batters and walked three. 
 
Next up, the Panthers will play their final home game of the season against the Gryphons of Sarah Lawrence College on Friday, May 3 at 4 PM. Prior to the game, the Panthers will honor their senior student-athletes.
