Softball Advances to Skyline Conference Double Elimination Tournament After Taking Down Mount Saint Mary on Tuesday

NEWBURGH, N.Y. – The SUNY Old Westbury softball team is moving on after defeating the Knights of Mount Saint Mary in the first round of the conference tournament on Tuesday. The game went to nine innings with a final score of 12-2 in favor of the Panthers.

This will be OW's first appearance in the Skyline Conference double elimination tournament in SUNY Old Westbury history.

The Panthers will open the double elimination tournament against Farmingdale State College on Thursday, May 9 at 4 PM.

To open the game's scoring, the Panthers found themselves down a run after the Knights scored off an RBI double down the left field line.
 
Neither team would score a run for the next four innings as both starting pitchers continued to battle throughout the game.
 
The Panthers scored their first run in the top of the fifth inning courtesy of a sacrifice fly from Natalie Intrieri that scored Hillary Bennett.
 
With the score even at 1-1, the Panthers scored the go ahead run thanks to a single from Alaina Reilly to score Gianna DiLillo. The Panthers went into the final half inning with a 2-1 lead.
 
Mount Saint Mary would not go down easy in the bottom of the seventh inning. With two outs, the Knights scored a run after an RBI double.
 
With the score tied 2-2, the two teams went to two innings of additional play.
 
The Panthers had a massive ninth inning to give them extra cushioning and eventually the win over the Knights.
 
The ninth inning scoring began as Intrieri singled through the left side to score Bennett and advance DiLillo.
 
The Knights walked in a run with Ashley Pierce at the plate to grow the Panthers lead to 4-2.
 
Madison Danin had a big time RBI single to center field to score two runs courtesy of Reilly and Intrieri.  On the next at-bat, Taylor Murphy singled through the left side to score Amanda Varela who pinch ran. Angelina Fernandez reached base on an error and allowed Muehling to score.
 
Bennett continued her impressive day with an RBI double to score Faith Binaso who pinch ran and Murphy. Bennett scored later in the inning after a failed pick off attempt. Reilly continued her massive day with a double to right field to score Intrieri.
 
The Panthers closed it out in the bottom of the ninth inning and walked away with the victory by a final score of 12-2. The Panthers advance to the double elimination round of the Skyline Conference Tournament.

Hillary Bennett finished the day going 4-5 at the dish. Bennett scored three runs and had two RBIs. Another Panthers with a massive game was none other than Alaina Reilly who went 4-5 at the plate. Reilly finished with two RBIs and a run.

Natalie Intrieri went 2-4 with two runs and two RBIs. Ashley Pierce, Madison Danin, Madson muehling, Taylor Murphy and Gianna DiLillo all finished with a hit.
 
As a team, the Panthers recorded 15 hits, seven of which came in the top of the ninth inning.
 
Layla Ramos had a great game in the circle. Ramos went all nine innings and allowed only two earned runs. Ramos struck out five batters and allowed only one walk.

The Panthers first matchup in the double elimination tournament will be a rematch against the Rams of Farmingdale State College on Thursday, May 9 at 4 PM. The entire tournament will take place on the campus of Farmingdale State.
