Women’s Volleyball Victorious Over Purchase in Five Set Battle on Tuesday Night

OLD WESTBURY, N.Y. -  The SUNY Old Westbury women's volleyball team took down the Panthers of Purchase College on Tuesday night. Old Westbury took the match, 3-2. 
 
Old Westbury improves to 5-10 overall on the season and moves to 2-4 in Skyline Conference play. 
 
In the opening set, Old Westbury had a strong attack. The team recorded 11 kills and just three errors. OW saw 25 total attacks. Purchase committed five errors in the opening set leading to Old Westbury taking the opening match, 25-15.
 
The second set was a closer set. Both sides finished with seven kills. The score flipped sides several times throughout the set but ultimately it was Old Westbury that took the second set victory, 25-18. 
 
Old Westbury had a chance to take the third set and close the match but Purchase battled back. Purchase put up 13 kills and just three errors to put them ahead. The Panthers of Old Westbury could not close it out and come back. PC took the third set, 25-20. 
 
Purchase used their momentum in the fourth set to make it a five set match. IN the fourth set, Purchase saw seven kills and 11 errors compared to Old Westbury's eight kills and six errors. Purchase took the fourth set, 25-22. 
 
In the fifth, deciding set, the Panthers of Old Westbury came out strong. OW took an early 8-3 lead. Purchase managed to rally back, but in the end, Old Westbury held on to take the fifth set, 15-11 and win the match, 3-2. 
 
Paige Herbert had a strong night as she finished with 15 kills and 16 digs. Stephanie Maser recorded 14 kills, nine service aces, an assist and 22 digs. Kasey Coppola finished the night with eight kills, and two blocks. Katia Gomez had an impressive night. Gomez finished with 38 assists, three blocks and 23 digs. Sofia Lopez also played well as she finished with 27 digs and two assists. 
 
Next up, the Panthers continue conference play as they hit the road for a match against Maritime. The Panthers and Privateers face off on Saturday, October 25 at 11 AM.
