Men’s Soccer Victorious in Season Opener Against Baruch

OLD WESTBURY, N.Y. -  The SUNY Old Westbury men's soccer team was victorious in their season opener against the Bearcats of Baruch College on Friday afternoon. The final score was 3-1 in favor of the Panthers.
 
Old Westbury rises to 1-0 on the young campaign.
 
The Panthers got things going just under 28 minutes into the match as Jose Lopez scored off a nice assist from Ashel Santos. Old Westbury took the early 1-0 lead.
 
Just about six minutes later, the Panthers grew their lead to 2-0 thank to Henrik Ropstad who found the back of the net thanks to a strong pass from Jeffery Baires.
 
Going into halftime, the Panthers held a 2-0 lead over the Bearcats.
 
In the second half, Ropstad struck again on another strong assist from Santos. The Panthers would lead 3-0 until 72:35 where Baruch scored their lone goal.
 
In the end, the Panthers were able to hold on and win their first game of the season over the Bearcats, 3-1.
 
Henrik Ropstad had a strong afternoon as he finished with two goals, two shots on goal and siz total shots. Jose Lopez finished with one goal on one shot attempt. Ashel Santos played strong defense but also recorded two assists.
 
In net, Paul DeGennaro had a strong performance. He finished with seven saves after facing 15 shots on target.
 
Next up, the Panthers will open their season at home as they welcome Albertus Magnus to Panther Park. That match is set for Tuesday, September 2 at 3:30 PM.
