A double-double from
Joel Ofori helped to push the SUNY Old Westbury men's basketball team ahead of the Dolphins of the University of Mount Saint Vincent this evening from the Clark Athletic Center, 80-70. With the win, Old Westbury sits at 7-14 overall and 5-6 in Skyline Conference play while UMSV drops to 2-18 (1-10 Skyline).
The first half was neck-and-neck from open to close, with the lead changing hands 15 times over 20 minutes. Tied at 11 early, Old Westbury fired off an 8-0 run. The Dolphins responded by immediately scoring the next nine points to regain the lead. From there, the score would go on to be tied four more times until a foul shot from the visitors gave them a one-point advantage, 37-36, at the halftime break.
It would remain close for the opening five minutes of the second half before an 11-0 run broke open the lead in favor of Old Westbury, 55-45 with 11 minutes to play. Over the next five minutes, UMSV would work the score back within one, 59-58, but a three-pointer from
Christian Thomas and a tip-in from Ofori regained a more comfortable advantage that the Panthers would carry throughout the end of the contest.
Jermaine King Jr. led Old Westbury with 18 points and eight assists, adding five rebounds and two steals. Ofori,
Imole Akinwale, and
Josh Minton each added 15 points. Ofori added a team-leading 16 rebounds for the double-double. Thomas led with three steals.
The Panthers will head to Farmingdale on Saturday, February 7 for a 1:00 pm tip-off.
