Panthers Come Up Short in Skyline Road Match at Manhattanville

Fredericks records match-high nine kills as Panthers fall to Manhattanville

Purchase, NY – Following a Skyline Conference loss to St. Joseph's University Long Island, the SUNY Old Westbury men's volleyball team continued its road stand Saturday evening traveling to Purchase, NY to take on the Valiants of Manhattanville University in conference action. The Panthers ultimately fell to Manhattanville in straight sets 3-0 (25-22, 25-21, 25-18) at Kennedy Gymnasium.

Manhattanville opened the first set with a quick 5-0 lead before the Panthers answered with a run of their own to cut the deficit to 6-3 before eventually tying the set at 11-11. Despite the comeback effort by Old Westbury, the Valiants responded with a strong offensive run backed by solid defensive pressure to close out the opening frame 25-22.

The second set saw the Panthers jump out to an early start before the Valiants regained momentum and built a lead as large as 20-13. Old Westbury continued to battle and worked to close the gap late in the set, but Manhattanville held on to claim the set 25-21 and take a 2-0 lead in the match.

Trying to stay alive in the third set, the Panthers fought to keep things close early on, but Manhattanville once again used a strong offensive stretch to create separation and ultimately secured the final set 25-18 to complete the sweep.

Offensively, sophomore middle blocker Torrence Fredericks led Old Westbury with a match-high nine kills while also contributing an ace and a team-high eight digs. Freshman middle blocker Jason Giles added four kills and an ace, while freshmen setter Lucas Rogers contributed three kills(.083) and eight assists in the Panthers' offensive effort.

Senior setter Ashel Santos guided the offense with a team-high 11 assists, while also finishing with two service aces and five digs on the night. Julius Morales also added three kills two digs for the Panthers.

At the net, freshmen outside hitter Julius Morales led the Panthers defensively with three blocks, while Shane Kielb and Lucas Rogers each added a block. Rogers also contributed defensively with four digs.

As a team, Old Westbury finished the match with 23 kills, four service aces, 33 digs, and five total blocks.


What's Next?

The Panthers will continue Skyline Conference play on Thursday, March 19, when they travel to Bronxville, NY to take on Sarah Lawrence College. First serve is scheduled for 7:00 PM.
