Panthers Drop Spring Games Contest to Coe College 11-1

Old Westbury scores early before Kohawks pull away with multi-inning surge

Winter Haven, Fla. — Coming off a tough stretch against Plattsburgh State University where they were defeated 4-0 in their season opener, the SUNY Old Westbury softball team continued their spring games in Florida, this time returning to the Diamondplex Complex to take on the Kohawks of Coe College.

The Panthers ultimately fell to the Kohawks by a score of 11-1. Old Westbury now sits at 0-2 on the season, while Coe improves to 7-6.

On the afternoon of the contest, it was the Panthers who struck first, setting the tone early in the opening inning as the Kohawks were held scoreless.

However, in the second inning, Coe responded with a strong offensive push, scoring three runs and shifting momentum in their favor. The third inning proved similar, as the Kohawks added two more runs while holding the Panthers scoreless.

In the fourth inning, Coe continued to build on their lead, tacking on two additional runs heading into the fifth. The fifth inning proved to be a defensive stand for both teams, as neither side was able to generate any offense.

In the final inning, Old Westbury struggled to slow down the Kohawks' attack, as Coe added four more runs to secure the 11-1 victory.

With the loss, the Panthers still saw some key individual performances throughout the contest. Aliya Feerick recorded a run scored and a stolen base, while Ashley Pierce drove in the Panthers' lone run of the game. Katie Knecht and Christina Ravo each recorded a hit to lead Old Westbury offensively.

Despite the result, the Panthers showed defensive resilience in stretches, including a scoreless fifth inning, and were able to generate early momentum by scoring first in the contest. Old Westbury also turned in multiple defensive outs in key moments to cut into the lead.
