Panthers’ comeback effort falls short in 10-inning road loss to New Jersey City

Old Westbury erases eight-run deficit with eight-run eighth inning before falling 9-8 in extras

TEANECK, N.J. – Following a Saturday split with Mount Saint Mary College at Lasorda Legacy Park in Yaphank, N.Y., the SUNY Old Westbury baseball team traveled to Teaneck, N.J. Tuesday afternoon for a non-conference matchup against New Jersey City University. Trailing 8-0 through seven innings, the Panthers stormed back with an eight-run eighth inning to tie the game before ultimately falling, 9-8, in 10 innings.

New Jersey City struck first with two runs in the second inning before adding two more in the third. The Gothic Knights pushed across one run in the fifth and three in the sixth to take an 8-0 lead.

Old Westbury answered in a big way in the top of the eighth.

Noah Tannanbaum scored the Panthers' first run of the inning after reaching base and later coming around on a New Jersey City error. Luke Skouras then scored to cut the deficit to 8-2 before Costa Bournias delivered an RBI single to plate Nick Mace. David Garren followed with an RBI single through the right side to score Bournias, and Chris Gilroy came through with a two-run single up the middle to bring home Garren and John Gilroy.

The Panthers continued to apply pressure from there. Skouras drew an RBI walk, Angelo Velez followed with another RBI walk, and JT Torres worked a bases-loaded walk to force in the tying run as Old Westbury erased the eight-run deficit and evened the score at 8-8.

As a team, the Panthers showed resilience by battling all the way back after falling behind early. Old Westbury also remained patient at the plate, drawing seven walks and capitalizing on late scoring opportunities to fuel the comeback.

Tannanbaum paced the Panthers offensively with two hits and two runs scored. Old Westbury also got one hit apiece from JT Torres, Brandon Hernandez, Bournias, Garren, and Chris Gilroy.

The Panthers' eight runs were scored by Tannanbaum (2), Nick Mace, Bournias, Garren, John Gilroy, Chris Gilroy, and Skouras.

New Jersey City answered in the bottom of the 10th inning, using an RBI single from Daniel Kapsch to walk off the Panthers.
