Panthers Come Up Short Against Mount Saint Vincent

Kunen puts up two goals while Gonzalez finishes with 12 saves as Dolphins outlast Panthers

RIVERDALE, N.Y. – The SUNY Old Westbury women's lacrosse team came up short on the road Tuesday evening, falling to the University of Mount Saint Vincent, 8-4, in a Skyline Conference matchup in Riverdale, New York.

Mount Saint Vincent opened the game with three unanswered goals in the first quarter before the Panthers got on the board with 3:35 remaining in the period on a goal by Ciana Kunen. The Dolphins carried a 3-1 lead into the second quarter and added three more goals before halftime to take a 6-1 advantage into the break.

Old Westbury settled in during the second half and showed improvement on the defensive end, holding Mount Saint Vincent to just two goals over the final two quarters. The Panthers added one goal in the third quarter and two more in the fourth, but the comeback effort fell short.

Kunen led Old Westbury offensively with two goals. Katia Maisonneuve and Ashley Maniscalco each added a goal, while Katherine Campbell recorded an assist. In net, Jara Gonzalez came up big throughout the contest, finishing with 12 saves.

Defensively, the Panthers were active all over the field, totaling 30 ground balls as a team. Players with two or more ground balls included Katherine Campbell (4), Stefany Donnelly (4), Annabella Runyan (4), Ciana Kunen (3), Jara Gonzalez (3), Katia Maisonneuve (2), Sydney Kim (2), Emely Galvez (2), Jasmine Roldan (2) and Stephanie Velez (2).

Two Things Old Westbury Did Right
Old Westbury's defensive effort was a bright spot, led by Gonzalez's 12-save performance in goal that helped keep the Panthers within striking distance. The Panthers also responded well after halftime, tightening up defensively and outscoring Mount Saint Vincent 3-2 over the final two quarters.

What's Next
Old Westbury returns home on Tuesday, April 7 for a Skyline Conference matchup against Maritime College. Opening draw is scheduled for 4:00 p.m. at Panther Park.
