Steven Jackson enters his third season as assistant men’s basketball coach at the SUNY College at Old Westbury. Jackson brought over 20 years of coaching experience at both the high school and middle school levels to Old Westbury when he arrived for the 2012-13 season.
A graduate of Massapequa High School, Jackson earned a BA in Sociology from Susquehanna University in 1973 and a MA in Education from Stony Brook University in 1981.
In just his first season on staff at Old Westbury, Jackson was a member of a historic Panther team. Old Westbury set a program-best record with a 25-4 mark, won both the ECAC Metro Region Championship and Skyline Conference Regular Season Championship en route to being named D3Hoops.com Metro Region and Skyline Conference Coaching Staff of the Year.
His 22 year coaching career began in 1980 at the Three Village School District; where his first middle school boy’s basketball team went on to win the state championship in 1984, playing for Ward Melville High School
After stints as a high school assistant at West Babylon High School (1982), Deer Park High School (1983) and Oceanside High School (1986). Jackson spent the majority of his coaching career in Long Beach (1986-2002), where as an assistant he helped the Marines to two division titles (1992-93, 1997-98) and one Nassau County Championship in 1992-93.
In his one season as head varsity baseball coach at Amityville High School (1985), he led a team that had won a single game the previous year to within one game of the Suffolk County playoffs.
In 2010, Jackson retired as a history teacher with over 30 years in the classroom. Jackson is also the author of Think Twice About Teaching, a book about education.
Several of his players have gone on to play professional basketball, baseball and football.
Jackson currently resides in Long Beach, New York.
