Brian Buckner enters his third season as assistant men’s soccer coach at SUNY College at Old Westbury under head coach Jamie San Filippo.
His coaching experience prior to arrivng at Old Westbury included serving as coach/trainer for the 2011 Garden City Gladiators (U-18 New York State Cup Champions), Long Island Junior Soccer League Division 1-5 & Premier (Region 1 & North East Regional Premier League) from 2002-present, Director of Skills for Garden City centennials Travel Soccer Team (2010-11).
Buckner attended The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (1994-95) and was a starter at midfield and forward. Buckner’s greatest college soccer moment was scoring the initial goal while tacking on two assists in the largest rout in Virginia history as the #4 Tarheels defeated #1 ranked Virginia Cavaliers 5-1.
From 1993-95, he was a member of the United States National Under 20-Team.
Buckner has also played professional for Long Island Rough Riders (USL Premier Development League, 2003) and Oshawa Flames (Canadian Professional Soccer League, 2000).
Buckner was a schoolboy star in Ohio, claiming a pair of Regional and District titles, while advancing to the 1992 state championship match. As a senior at University School, he was named Parade All-American, voted Top 100 High School Seniors and an All-State selection. As a member of the Cleveland United Soccer Club, Buckner won three consecutive State Cup Championships (1991-93). In 1988, Buckner represented United States at Gothia Cup.
Buckner is working towards completing his degree in sociology with a minor in philosophy from The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Buckner was raised in Moreland Hills, Ohio, and currently resides in Brooklyn, New York.
