Mary Jo Fazio enters her 10th season as head softball coach at SUNY Old Westbury. Fazio begins the 2016 season with a championship in sight. In 2012, Fazio guided her squad to a program best 26-19 record. In 2009, Fazio posted then a program best 22-14 record and was named Skyline Conference Coach of the Year. In 2011, she captured her second career Skyline Conference Coach of the Year award and claimed the program's first Skyline Conference Sportsmanship Award. In 2012, Ol d Westbury was the conference's repeat winner of the sportsmanship award. In eight seasons, Fazio has compiled a record of 149-160 at Old Westbury.
Fazio advanced the Panthers to the ECAC Metro Region Championship Tournament in six straight seasons (2008-13). During her tenure at Old Westbury, Fazio has coached one ECAC Pitcher of the Year, one ECAC Rookie of the Year, four All-Region players, one Skyline Conference Pitcher of the Year, nine All-Skyline Conference First Team selections and 12 on the All-Skyline Conference Second Team.
Fazio arrived at Old Westbury after a three year coaching term at the Academy of St. Joseph in Brentwood, New York. The team at ASJ improved over the three years to admiration of league coaches and officials.
Fazio's coaching career started in 1991 at Southwoods Middle School, in Syosset, New York where she coached both the softball and volleyball teams. Coaching was put on hold for a few years due to the birth of her two children. Upon her return, she coached for the Islip Little League in 2003, where she positioned her team to a second place finish. Coach Fazio then moved onto coach a 9-10 year old team that won second place in District 35 Long Island in addition to playing at the Williamsport Tournament. Over the next three years she continued coaching teams in little league to championship levels as well as taking on the varsity team at the Academy of St. Joseph. Since 2009, Fazio has been a coach for the 12U-18U in the Long Island Hurricanes fastpitch travel softball organization. Fazio was recently named the director of training for the Hurricanes for the upcoming 2014 travel season.
Fazio is a native Long Islander and while growing up in Wantagh, New York, she played volleyball, basketball and softball throughout high school. Her senior year, she was voted MVP of the volleyball team and received All-County honors. Fazio received All-League honors in softball as well as being named Senior Athlete of the Year. Her softball team was second in the state her senior year, tallying a record of 28-1. Softball continued through college at Hofstra University where Coach Fazio was a four year starter and a three year captain.
