PANTHERS DOWNED BY YORK, 64-59

JAMAICA, N.Y.-The SUNY College
at Old Westbury Men's Basketball team lost on the road to York
College in non-conference action on Wednesday night at the York
College Gymnasium. Old Westbury shot just 28 percent from the
floor in the opening half and overcame a seven point half-time
deficit to take a two point lead in the final 2:11. The
Cardinals of York College scored seven unanswered points down the
stretch to give the home team a 64-59 victory. The
win lifts the Cardinals to 4-3 on the season, while Old Westbury
has lost three consecutive to fall to 1-3.
York came out on fire, jumping out to an early 28-14 lead with
9:03 left in the first half. The Cardinals connected on 15 of
24 shots from the field; to build a 38-31 lead at the half while
Old Westbury shot 10 for 35 from the floor. Rory Hicks
drained a three-pointer with 12:25 remaining in the game, bringing
the Panthers within three, 50-47. Alanzo Phillips tied the
game at 57 on a lay-up with 2:56 to go in the game and Ian Johnson
knocked down two free-throws to give OW their first lead of the
game with 2:11 in the second half, 59-57. Michael Salamaca,
who led the Cardinals with 14 points connected on a three-pointer
with 50 seconds on the clock to give his team a 60-59 lead.
Salamaca nailed three of four free throws in the final minute as he
scored six of the final seven points to preserve the win for York.
Two Panthers scored in double figures with Garthlette James
leading the way by scoring 17 points on 6 of 10 shooting from the
floor. Brandon Mays netted 11 points and grabbed seven boards
for the Panthers. Ian Johnson added eight points while Rory
Hicks finished with five points and two steals. Upfront,
Lester Prosper added eight points to go along with six rebounds and
two blocks while, Divine Jackson pulled down a game high nine
rebounds including four on the offensive end. Alanzo Phillips
grabbed six rebounds, before fouling out with 2:29 in the second
half.
Three players for York posted double figures in the point column
with Michael Salamanca leading the Cardinals. The trio was
rounded out by Omari Phipps (12 points, 8 rebounds) and Marcel
Esonwune (11 points, 6 rebounds).
York edged Old Westbury in the rebound column, 43-36 while the
Panthers tallied 10 steals and forced 17 Cardinal turnovers.
Old Westbury returns to action on Saturday, December
1st to kick off their conference schedule on the road at
Mount Saint Mary. Tip-off is slated for 4:00 pm. For
