OLD WESTBURY, N.Y.-The SUNY College at Old
Westbury men's basketball fell to Brooklyn College (2-0) in the
opening round of the Old Westbury Panther Classic, 74-69 on Friday
evening at the Clark Athletic Center. Oswego State (3-0)
topped Husson University 84-75 (0-1) in the opening game to move on
to the championship game.
Old Westbury trailed most of the first half, and Richard
Jean-Baptiste (14 points, 12 rebounds) and Darnell Cudjoe (8
points, 5 rebounds) led the Bridges to a 39-32 halftime lead over
the Panthers. Old Westbury used a 20-5 run midway through the
second half to take a 52-47 lead with 13:54 remaining.
Sophomore Lester Prosper (Bellmore, N.Y.) dropped-in two of his 14
points on an assist by senior Garthlette James (White Plains, N.Y.)
to give Old Westbury a 69-67 advantage with 1:10 remaining.
Brooklyn clamped down on Old Westbury over the final 1:10, forcing
the Panthers into shooting 0-4 from the field. Richard
Jean-Baptiste scored three of his team's final seven points to go
onto a 74-67 victory, advancing to the Championship game.
Junior Hakiem George (New York, N.Y.) scored a team-high 22
points 8-12 shooting from the floor including 5-of-8 from beyond
the arc to lead the Panthers. George added eight rebounds,
four steals and four assists while Lester Prosper finished with 14
points on 7-of-12 shooting to go along with seven rebounds, six
blocks and two steals. Junior Dwayne Messam (Brooklyn, N.Y.)
added 12 points with four triples at the same time as Garthlette
James had 11 points and two steals. Junior Shane DeNully
(Bronx, N.Y.) handed out a game-high seven assists to go with five
points, four rebounds and two steals.
Richard Jean-Baptiste posted a double-double, combining 27
points (game-high) and 15 rebounds (game-high) to guide the Bridges
past Old Westbury. Daniell Nisbett followed with 17 points
and four steals while Darnell Cudjoe registered 15 points and 11
rebounds. Ahmad Hemingway chipped in with 11 points and eight
rebounds.
Old Westbury was edged in the rebound department, 46-35 and was
held to 5-8 from the line while Brooklyn connected on 14-of-19
attempts. Old Westbury shot 27-of-71 (38%) from the floor as
Brooklyn hit 27-of-66 (40.9%). The Old Westbury defensive
attack forced 28 Brooklyn turnovers into 11 steals.
Oswego State, which led 47-31 at half-time, was paced by four
Lakers in double-figures. Tommy Downing poured in a game-high
20 points while Stanley Francois (19 points, 14 rebounds) and Chad
Burridge (8 points, 16 rebounds) added a dominant showing to lead
Oswego State to victory. Kyle Reuter scored 14 points and
Jamal Lightbourne had 12 points on 10-12 shooting from the charity
stripe to round out the scoring for the Lakers.
Scott Kissenger led Husson University with 17 points, Blaine
Meehan scored 15 points on 7-of-7 shooting in the second-half, Matt
MacKenzie had 13 points and Brock Bradford added 10.
The Green and Ivory will pick up their dribble next on Saturday,
November 22nd for the consolation game of the Old
Westbury Panther Classic against Husson University. Tip-off
is slated for 3:00 p.m. followed by Oswego State and Brooklyn
