OLD WESTBURY, N.Y.-The SUNY College at Old
Westbury men's basketball team wrapped up the Old Westbury Panther
Classic with a victory over Husson University, 82-69 to claim third
place and moves to 1-1 on the season while the loss drops the
Braves' record to 0-2 to start the year. Oswego State (4-0)
rolled past Brooklyn College (2-1), 89-62 to claim the
Championship.
Old Westbury led from the start with the Husson shooting in the
range of 53 percent in the opening half and connecting from deep.
Old Westbury stretched the lead to 30-19 with 8:24 remaining in the
first-half before Husson mounted its comeback led by Jay
Uhrin. Uhrin sparked the Braves' offense as he connected on
two of his three triples to close the margin at half-time,
42-40.
In the second half, sophomore Lester Prosper (Bellmore, N.Y.)
helped stretch Old Westbury's largest lead of the game to 15 points
as he converted a three point play. Husson gradually cut into
the deficit before putting together a 9-2 run to pull to 74-67, but
Old Westbury closed the game late with an 8-2 burst.
Lester Prosper led the Green and Ivory with 26 points on
10-of-18 shooting from the floor and two blocks in 36 minutes of
play. Prosper led the charge on the glass for Old Westbury
with a career high 19 rebounds (10 offensive). Senior
Garthlette James (White Plains, N.Y.) followed with 12 points and
six rebounds (4 offensive) while junior Dwayne Messam (Brooklyn,
N.Y.) had 11 points on 3-of-5 shooting from beyond the arc to go
with five rebounds. Junior Hakiem George (New York, N.Y.) put
up 10 points of his own and added five rebounds, four assists and
two steals as classmate Shane DeNully (Bronx, N.Y.) registered nine
points, seven assists and three steals to lead the backcourt.
In all three Braves scored in double figures, with Matt
MacKenzie leading the way with 19 points and seven boards.
Husson got 15 points from Brock Bradford and 11 points from Jay
Uhrin to round out the trio.
By the end of the game, Old Westbury held the Braves 40 percent
from the floor (27-of-66), with a 28.6 percent rate from behind the
arc (8-of-28) and forced 18 Husson University turnovers.
Prosper's 19 rebounds led Old Westbury in the rebounding battle
(44-32) for the second-straight game.
Oswego State stormed past Brooklyn College by building on a 39-24
half-time lead with a 50-28 scoring advantage in the second
half. Kyle Reuter paced Oswego State with a 30-point outburst
which included 26 points on 6-of-6 from downtown in the
second-half. Reuter knocked down six of Oswego State's 14
triples to garner the Old Westbury Panther Classic Championship and
MVP. Stanley Francois posted eight points and 14 rebounds (9
offensive) while Chad Burridge added 12 points and eight rebounds
to round out the top performances for Oswego State.
Richard Jean-Baptiste led Brooklyn College with 14 points, Ahmad
Hemingway scored 13 and Daniell Nisbett added 10.
