OLD WESTBURY, N.Y.-The SUNY College at Old
Westbury men's basketball team opened their Skyline Conference
schedule at the Clark Athletic Center with an 88-78 loss to St.
Joseph's College-L.I. on Tuesday evening. With the loss, Old
Westbury moves to 1-3 on the season and 0-1 in league play while
St. Joseph's-L.I. moves to 4-0 and 1-0 in conference action.
St. Joseph's-L.I. went on a 15-2 run over the final 3:30 to
close out the first half with a 39-33 advantage. Old Westbury
chipped away at a 13-point deficit at the 5:31 mark down, 67-54,
until junior Bill Reese (Selma, AL) scored six consecutive points
to lead the Panthers on an 8-0 run to pull within five
points. Over the final 4:25 the Golden Eagles went on to
outscore Old Westbury 21-16 to preserve the victory.
Old Westbury was led by Bill Reese off the bench, who had 22
points on 9-of-15 shooting with three steals in 24 minutes.
Junior Hakiem George (New York, N.Y.) followed with 21 points,
including three triple and six rebounds. Sophomore Lester
Prosper (Bellmore, N.Y.) added 13 points, nine rebounds and three
blocks. Junior's Shane DeNully (Bronx, N.Y.) and Kristopher
Afum (Bronx, N.Y.) each chipped in with six points for the Panthers
while DeNully dished out a game-high eight assists and Afum pulled
recorded five rebounds. Junior Dwayne Messam (Brooklyn, N.Y.)
and senior Garthlette James (White Plains, N.Y.) each had seven
rebounds.
The trio of DeNully, James and Messam combined to shoot 0-11 in
the second half, including 0-5 from beyond the arc.
J.J. Walsh scored 30 points and David Acree had 23 points to
lead the Golden Eagles to their fourth victory in as many games to
start the season. Walsh added a game-high 15 rebounds and
four blocks while Acree connected on five triples. St.
Joseph's-L.I. registered five Golden Eagles in double-digit
scoring, rounded out by Chris Niblock (11 points, 11 rebounds),
Chris Jiminez (13 points) and Mike Crisci (10).
St. Joseph's-L.I. outshot Old Westbury from the field with a
41.5 percent (27-of-65) mark compared to 35.1 percent output for
the Panthers. The Golden Eagles made 18-of-23 shots from the
free-throw line in the second half to help them hold off Old
Westbury, which they led 39-33 at the half. Each team knocked
down eight 3-pointers in the game. The Panthers out rebounded
10-5 off the offensive glass as St. Joseph's-L.I. held a 17-12
advantage off the defensive glass to draw even in the rebounding
department.
