IN DOUBLE DIGITS
DECEMBER 4, 2008
NEW YORK, N.Y.-The SUNY College at Old Westbury
men's basketball team defeated Yeshiva University in Skyline
Conference action by a score of 75-57 on Thursday evening at the
Max Stern Athletics Center, Old Westbury's largest margin of the
year. The victory snapped a two game skid for Old Westbury,
who now moves to 2-3 on the season and 1-1 in league play while the
loss puts Yeshiva at 4-3 on year and 2-2 in conference play.
It took two and a half minutes for Old Westbury to score, but
the Panthers responded to Martin Leibovich's layup and went on an
8-0 run and never looked back. Old Westbury jumped out to an
18-8 lead as junior Bill Reese (Selma, AL) had 10 of the Panthers'
first 18 points, which also included two triples from junior
Kristopher Afum (Bronx, N.Y.) Old Westbury found a groove, as
a three pointer by Bill Reese sparked a 14-4 Old Westbury run that
included three consecutive 3-pointers from senior John Hemingway
(Queensbridge, N.Y.) and Reese between the 3:56 and :22 second
mark. OW's run was capped by a pair of free throws by junior
Dwayne Messam (Brooklyn, N.Y.) with :22 seconds remaining to lift
Old Westbury to a 44-25 lead at the end of the first stanza.
Consistent shooting extended throughout the Old Westbury lineup as
the Panthers shot 50 percent (29 of 58) from the field and hit 12
of 25 three point attempts. On the flip side, Yeshiva shot
41.3 percent (29-of-46) from the field and won the battle of the
boards, 30-28 after edging Old Westbury by one, 32-31 in the second
half.
Junior Hakiem George (New York, N.Y.) and Bill Reese each scored
13 points to lead Old Westbury in the scoring department.
George poured in 13 points and has hit double digits scoring in
four of five games this season. George was 5-of-10 on field
goal attempts and knocked down three of six from three point
territory. Reese finished with four assists and one steal and
was also hot from the field, swishing five of seven chances,
including two of four from long range.
Senior Garthlette James (White Plains, N.Y.) sank 5-of-6 from
the floor, grabbed three boards from the offensive glass and added
three steals, three assists and a blocked shot in 19 minutes of
action. Sophomore Lester Prosper (Bellmore, N.Y.) recorded 12
points on 6-of-9 shooting to go along with five rebounds and one
blocked shot. John Hemingway finished with 12 points nearly
tripling his previous best of five set against Hofstra
University. Hemingway knocked down four triples (4-of-7 3FG)
while Dwayne Messam pulled down a team-high six boards, five of
which came on the defensive end.
Martin Leibovich led Yeshiva with a game-high 15 points and
