PANTHER BASEBALL STUNNED BY MOUNT SAINT MARY IN OPENING ROUND OF SKYLINE CONFERENCE TOURNAMENT

OLD WESTBURY, N.Y.-The SUNY College at Old Westbury Baseball team was eliminated from the Skyline Conference Post-Season Tournament on Wednesday evening at the Jackie Robinson Athletic Complex after losing a 10-7 decision to Mount Saint Mary College.  Old Westbury slides to 13-27 overall while Mount Saint Mary advances to the second round with a record of 13-23. 

Panthers at the plate: The Green and Ivory registered four Panthers with multiple hits in a tough elimination loss to Mount Saint Mary College.  Emmanuel Mateo (2-for-4, R) doubled home David Collado (2-for-3) in the fourth inning followed by a single up the middle to drive in Thomas Butler (0-for-3, 2 R, 2 BB) in the ninth inning. Collado hit a pair of singles to drive in one run and cross the plate for two scores.  John Taglienti (2-for-4) hit a pair of singles to go along with one run batted in and one score while Anthony Fernandez (2-for-4, SB) drove in one run as he stroked two singles.     

Blue Knights at the plate: B.J. Masopust (3-for-4, SB) was one of four Blue Knights to record multiple hits.  Masopust doubled and hit a pair of singles to drive in three runs and two scores while Brian Visconti (3-for-6, 2 SB) tripled and scored three runs.  Anthony Forgione (2-for-6, 3 RBI) clubbed a two run home run in the third inning to bring home Chris Schacca (1-for-4, 2B, RBI).  Matthew Berger (3-for-4) doubled and hit two singles.   

Panthers on the mound: George Pagan suffered the loss after the senior tossed the opening four and two third innings.  Pagan allowed six earned runs on seven hits with three strikeouts and three walks.  Frank Russo closed out the fifth inning with a timely strikeout, but let up one run in the sixth inning before Dan Fordyce tossed one third of the sixth.  David Collado closed out the sixth inning and worked the seventh inning where he gave up two earned runs on two hits with two walks and three strikeouts.  Robert Whitenack pitched the final two and one third innings in which he gave up one earned run on three hits. 

Blue Knights on the mound: Michael Redmond earned the victory after throwing six innings.  Redmond surrendered six earned runs on six hits with four walks and five strikeouts before Kyle Smith worked two innings of scoreless relief.  Smith allowed two hits and struck out two, leading up to the ninth inning where Chris Gage closed the door on the Panthers season to earn the save.  Gage allowed one earned run on two hits with one strikeout to conclude Old Westbury's Conference Championship run.

Game notes:  Old Westbury was out-hit, 14-10 including 5-1 in the extra base hit department.  On the base path, Old Westbury stranded 11 Panthers and stole five bases while Mount Saint Mary left 12 Blue Knights on base and swept three bases.  In the field, Mount Saint Mary committed four errors.  On the mound, Old Westbury struck out seven Blue Knights and handed out five walks as Mount Saint Mary had seven strikeouts and five walks.
