PANTHERS UPENDED BY EAGLES AND HAWKS AT HUNTER INVITATIONAL

NEW YORK, NY (www.oldwestburypanthers.com) - The SUY College at Old Westbury women's volleyball team dropped a pair of matches at the Hunter College Invitational on Saturday at the Hunter Sportsplex. Old Westbury fell to the host Hawks and the St. Joseph's-L.I. Eagles. Old Westbury was led by sophomore Tonya Miller (Nyack, NY) who was named to the All-Tournament team for her performance.
In the first match of the day, Old Westbury pushed St. Joseph's-L.I. to five sets. Old Westbury's points in the match came in the first and fourth set with 25-21 and 25-21 victories. The Panthers fell in sets two and three by scores of 25-21 and 25-18, respectively, and dropped the fifth set 15-11.
Against St. Joseph's-L.I., sophomore Kristina Giordano (Huntington Station, NY) led the Panthers with a .333 hitting percentage. She had eight kills with two errors in 18 total attempts. Also hitting well for Old Westbury were junior Ashley Greene (Bay Shore, NY) and Tynishia George (Medford, NY), who each finished with eight kills and hit .138. Tonya Miller added five kills. As a team, Old Westbury hit .065 from the field with 35 total kills, 26 errors in 139 total attempts. Kristina Giordano led the Panthers with 18 assists while also adding 12 digs and three service aces.
Defensively, Miller led the Panthers' blocking efforts with three solo blocks and three block assists. Tynishia George paced Old Westbury with 15 digs while freshman Katrina Zapanta (Astoria, NY) chipped in with 11.
In the second match of the day, Old Westbury fell in three sets to Hunter, with match scores of 25-12, 25-16 and 25-12.
Freshman Tinamarie French (North Babylon, NY) led the Panthers, finishing with three kills to hit .375 against the Hawks. Junior Tanaya Vinson (Woodside, NY) led the squad, hitting .400 with two kills in five total swings. As a team, Old Westbury hit -.172 for the match with nine total kills and 20 errors in 64 total attacks. Giordano once again captained the Old Westbury offense, finishing with five assists.
Defensively, Giordano led the Panthers with nine digs followed by George's six. George and Miller led the Old Westbury blocking efforts with one each.
