OLD WESTBURY MEN’S HOOPS FALL 88-80 TO BROOKLYN

BROOKLYN, NY (WWW.OLDWESTBURYPANTHERS.COM) - The SUNY College at Old Westbury men's basketball team dropped an 88-80 non-conference decision to the Brooklyn Bulldogs on Saturday afternoon at the West Quad Gymnasium in Brooklyn, New York. The Panthers fell to 4-3 on the season while the Bulldogs move to 4-3 overall. 

Senior Bill Reese (Selma, AL) sank a pair of free-throws to give Old Westbury an early 2-0 advantage. Brooklyn's senior Richard Jean-Baptiste (Queens, NY) responded with a long-ball to grab a 3-2 lead with 19:14 left. Both teams battled back and forth until sophomore Amil John (Brooklyn, NY) hit a pair of free-throws put Brooklyn up 24-17 with 12:15 remaining in the half. Old Westbury used an 11-5 run, capped off by a lay-in by freshman Mazyar Kashan (Great Neck, NY) with 8:24 left. Brooklyn closed out the half with a 14-9 run to take a 43-37 advantage into halftime. 

In the second half, Brooklyn knocked down a jumper and Old Westbury responded with their own to start off the half. Brooklyn put together a 13-point lead at the 11:56 mark to take a 56-43 lead. Old Westbury battled back to cut the deficit down to five, 66-61 with 8:13 remaining in the second half off a pair of made free-throws by junior Jason Kondra (East Syracuse, NY). But, Brooklyn connected on 17-of-22 free-throws and forced seven Old Westbury turnovers in the final 8:13 to hold onto the victory.

Bill Reese netted 18 points on 6-of-10 to lead the way for Old Westbury. Reese added five rebounds, five assists and four assists. Junior Lester Prosper (Bellmore, NY) and senior Patrick Bonna (Brooklyn, NY) followed with 15 points apiece. Prosper pulled-down nine boards (four offensive) and had one swat in 19 minutes while Bonna came off the bench and knocked down three triples before fouling out in 27 minutes of action. Senior Hakiem George (New York, NY) had 14 points and Jason Kondra registered 13 points on 4-of-4 shooting from the line to go with five rebounds and two steals. 

Brooklyn was led by Richard Jean-Baptiste, who posted a game-high 23 points and 10 rebounds to go with a pair of steals. Senior Daniel Nisbett (Staten Island, NY) dropped in 21 points on 10-of-10 from the line with two steals. Amil John and sophomore Tyshawn Russell (Jamaica, NY) rounded Brooklyn's double-digit scorers, registering 12 and 10 points, respectively. Junior Iouri Matsakov (Brooklyn, NY) chipped in with seven points and four steals. 

Old Westbury shot 41.9-percent from the field, 41.2-percent from behind the arc and 84-percent from the free throw line. Brooklyn connected on 48.3 percent from the field, 40 percent from three-point range and finished at 70.3 percent from the line. The Panthers out-rebounded Brooklyn 41-31, including a 13-6 advantage off the offensive glass.
