OLD WESTBURY, NY (www.oldwestburypanthers.com) – The SUNY College at Old Westbury women's basketball team earned a 63-61 non-conference victory over the St. Joseph's-Brooklyn Bears to close out the 2009 schedule on Wednesday evening at the Clark Athletic Center. With the win, Old Westbury improved to 7-3 for the season, while St. Joseph's-Brooklyn dropped to 4-7.
Old Westbury dominated the first half, jumping out to a 15-4 advantage on a long ball from junior
Brittany Jones (Elmont, NY) with 14:46 left. Old Westbury went out to as much as an 11 point lead in the first half, going up 35-24 with 28 seconds remaining. Old Westbury went into the locker room up, 35-26.
The Bears answered with a 15-5 run to start the second half, taking their first lead of the game at the 13:42 mark capped off by a three-pointer from sophomore Ashley McQuillan (Queens, NY). Freshman
Krystina Agard (Queens, NY) responded with a go ahead bucket from downtown to give the Panthers a 43-41 advantage with 12:29 remaining. Old Westbury went on to outscore St. Joseph's-Brooklyn 20-18 down the stretch to escape with the victory.
Jones led the way for Old Westbury with a game-high 15 points. Jones added 11 rebounds (six
offensive) to go with five steals in 25 minutes of court time. Jones was joined by
Krystina Agard and senior
Carlie Moore (Cornwall-on-Hudson, NY) as the Panthers' double-digit scorers with 14 points apiece. Agard finished the night with 10 rebounds, five assists and five steals while Moore went 6-of-10 from the field in addition to five rebounds, two blocked shots and one steal. Senior
Krystal Garner (Staten Island, NY) and freshman
Katelin Kube (West Babylon, NY) pulled down seven and six rebounds, respectively. Junior
Shannon Gilly (Staten Island, NY) chipped in with seven points, five rebounds, one blocked shot and one steal in 18 minutes off the bench.
The Bears were paced by two double-digit scorers. Leading the way for St. Joseph's-Brooklyn was Ashley McQuillan, with 14 points. McQuillan finished the game with five assists and two steals while freshman Stephanie Quick (Queens, NY) followed with 11 points. Senior Julia Serewko (Queens, NY) grabbed a game-high 16 boards while adding nine points, five assists, four blocked shots and two steals.
The decisive factor of the contest came down to the Panthers' field goal abilities, as St. Joseph's-Brooklyn was 35.2 percent from the floor, hitting 25-of-71 while Old Westbury shot 35.6 percent sinking 26-of-73 shots. Old Westbury controlled the boards, holding a 52-41 advantage, including 22-14 off the offensive glass. St. Joseph's-Brooklyn turned 35 turnovers into 22 points, while the Panthers had 18 points off 31 St. Joseph's-Brooklyn miscues.
