COCOA, FL.-The SUNY College at Old Westbury
baseball team dropped a heartbreaker and were unable to pull off
the come-from behind victory on Saturday evening as Bridgewater
State defeated the Panthers, 6-5 at the Cocoa Expo Sports Center in
Cocoa, Florida. The loss moves Old Westbury to 1-2 overall
while the Bears jump out to a 1-0 start.
Panthers at the plate: Sophomore Fernando Lopez
(Bronx, N.Y.) led the Panthers at the plate (3-for-4), collecting a
pair of singles and a double with an RBI and two runs scored.
Sophomore Emmanuel Mateo (Brooklyn, N.Y.) went 2-for-4 with a
double, 2 RBI and scored the tying run (5-5) off a single by
classmate Ryan Blanco (Ozone Park, N.Y.), who hit
2-for-3. Juniors Robert Moschetto (Massapequa, N.Y.)
and Albert Bevacqua (Staten Island, N.Y.) each scored one
run.
Bears at the plate: Bridgewater State led early
in the game, scoring one run in the first and two more in the
second off starter Dan Fordyce (Brentwood, N.Y.). Kelly LaDow
(2-for-5) singled home Brad Koneski (2-for-4, 2 SB, RBI) in the
first. David Kiloski singled in Brian Medairos
(2-for-4, RBI) from third to score the go ahead run in the
eighth. J.T. Mooney (2-for-5, 2 Runs) and Jeff Poupolo
(2-for-4, RBI, Run) led the Bears with a pair of hits.
Panthers on the mound: After giving up three
runs, Dan Fordyce retired the next 10 Bears leading in to the sixth
inning, where he allowed two more runs before handing the ball off
to the bullpen. Fordyce registered five strikeouts over 6.1
innings of work with nine hits. Junior Robert Hugli (New Hyde
Park, N.Y.) closed out the final two outs in the seventh
inning. Freshman Alexander Villanueva (Brooklyn, N.Y.)
suffered the loss after giving up one run on three hits in 2/3
innings to drop to 0-1. Sophomore Jorge Hiraldo (Brooklyn,
N.Y.) struck out two batters over the final 1.1 innings.
Bears on the mound: Bridgewater State starter
Sean O'Neill was tagged for five runs on 10 hits with two
strikeouts over 5.1 innings on the mound in the no-decision.
Reliever Brian Guillotte was credited with the win (1-0) after
striking out one and giving up one hit in 1.1 innings of
relief.
Game notes: Bridgewater State held the
advantage in hits, holding a 14-11 margin, while Old Westbury had
the 2-1 edge in the extra base hits department. On the base
path, Bridgewater State had 4 stolen bases and left eight on base
as Old Westbury stranded four. On the defensive front, each
team had one double play. On the mound, Old Westbury fanned
nine Bears as Bridgewater State had three strikeouts and issued one
walk.
The Green and Ivory return to the diamond on Sunday for a
double-header with non-conference opponent, Gettysburg
