PANTHER SOFTBALL TAKES TWO FROM JOHN JAY

OLD WESTBURY, N.Y.-The SUN Y College at Old Westbury softball team swept the Bloodhounds of John Jay College, 4-3 (8 Inn.) and 9-7 (5 Inn.) in a non-conference battle on Thursday afternoon at the Jackie Robinson Athletic Complex.  Old Westbury improves to 8-4 on the season while John Jay slips 1-9.

Panthers at the plate (Game 1): Sophomore Ashley Esposito (Nesconset, N.Y.) drove the ball to the third baseman to send home junior Jessica Stoddard (Montgomery, N.Y.) from third for the game-winning run in the bottom of the eighth.  Junior Sherrida Maxwell (Rosedale, N.Y.) delivered a single that scored sophomore Deborah Ciccarelli (St. James, N.Y.) for the game-tying run.  Maxwell went 2-for-4 at the plate while senior Traci Weeks (Bronx, N.Y.) drove in two runs and hit 1-for-2, including a single in the second that drove freshman Ashley Bozzo (Ronkonkoma, N.Y.) in for the score.  Bozzo (0-for-3, BB) also scored her second run in the eighth inning. 

Bloodhounds at the plate (Game 1): Marlenne Nunez led the club offensively with a 2-for-3 day performance at the plate.  Nunez had a clutch double in the eighth inning to scored Christina Perez (0-for-1, BB, 2-R) for the go ahead run.  Nunez then scored on the very next at-bat when Marina Gomez (1-for-3) stroked a single to center field.

Panthers in the circle (Game 1): Deborah Ciccarelli (6-4) tossed a complete game, going eight innings of three hit softball.  Ciccarelli allowed three runs and one walk while sitting down four batters on strikes. 

Bloodhounds in the circle (Game 1): Angela Lam went the distance for John Jay but was unable to get the win as she gave up four runs (0 earned) on six hits.  Lam handed out five free passes and had four strikeouts. 

Game Notes (Game 1): Old Westbury outhit John Jay, 6-3.  On the base path, Old Westbury had one stolen base and stranded 12 runners on base while John Jay left one on.  On the defensive front John Jay had five miscues.  In the circle, Old Westbury tallied four strikeouts and one walk while John Jay had four strikeouts and five walks.      

Panthers at the plate (Game 2): Ashley Bozzo delivered the big blows, drilling a grand- slam to left center in the opening frame.  Bozzo tripled to right center in the fourth inning to drive in sophomore Angela Adamkiewicz (Commack, N.Y.), freshman Samantha Siegler (Bellmore, N.Y.) and classmate Serina Booth (Hampton Bays, N.Y.).  Bozzo finished the game 3-for-3 with seven RBI and two runs scored while Booth went 3-for-3 with three runs scored.  Siegler and Adamkiewicz (1-for-2, RBI) each scored two runs.    

Bloodhounds at the plate (Game 2): Nina Chao sparked the offense, collecting two hits including a double that sent home Krystal Class in the fifth inning.  Class had two walks and scored two runs.

Panthers in the circle (Game 2): Angela Adamkiewicz (2-0) earned her second win of the season.  She threw 4.2 innings, allowing seven runs on eight hits and four walks in addition to one strikeout.  Deborah Ciccarelli was called on for relief work in the fifth inning.  She recorded the final out to earn her first save of the season after Adamkiewicz gave up five runs in the fifth inning. 

Bloodhounds in the circle (Game 2): Nina Chao suffered the loss, allowing nine runs (8 earned) on nine hits in three innings of work.  Chao walked three and had one strikeout.

Game Notes (Game 2): Old Westbury edged John Jay in hits, 9-8, including a 3-2 margin in extra base hits.  On the base path, Old Westbury had two stolen bases and stranded five runners while John Jay left five on base.  Defensively, Old Westbury committed three errors, compared to John Jay, which had two.  In the circle, Old Westbury had one strikeout and four walks while John Jay had one strikeout and three walks.
