FARMINGDALE, N.Y.-The second-seeded SUNY
College at Old Westbury softball team fell 5-0 to the top-seeded
Farmingdale State in the second round of the Skyline Conference
Championship Tournament on Saturday morning in Farmingdale.
Old Westbury (21-13) will take on the winner of Saturday's 12:00
p.m. elimination game between Mount Saint Mary-Polytechnic
Institute of NYU later in the afternoon at 2:00 p.m. with the
winner moving onto the Championship game against Farmingdale State
at 12:00 p.m. Sunday.
Panthers at the plate: In a quiet game at the
plate for Old Westbury, freshman Ashley Bozzo (Ronkonkoma, N.Y.)
singled to right field to ruin freshman Hope Zino's (Bayshore,
N.Y.) bid for a no-hitter in the fifth inning. Sophomore
Angela Adamkiewicz (Commack, N.Y.) led off the seventh with a
single to hit 1-for-3 at the plate with two strikeouts.
Rams at the plate: Farmingdale State got on the
board in the third inning when freshman Aubrey Walker (West
Babylon, N.Y.) lifted a doubled to right field to score Kaitlin
Keenan (West Islip, N.Y.). Farmingdale State tacked on three
more runs in the fourth inning off a three run blast by Keenan to
center field, scoring junior Lauren Poplawski (Levittown, N.Y.) and
senior Kristina Cirillo (Brentwood, N.Y.). Poplawski singled
up the middle in the sixth inning to knock home Cirillo from third
to put the Rams ahead, 5-0. Cirillo (2-for-3, 3B, 2 Runs) and
Poplawski (2-for-3, RBI, Run) paced the Rams with two hits while
Keenan (1-for-3) delivered the big blow and scored two
runs.
Panthers in the circle: Sophomore right-hander
Deborah Ciccarelli (St. James, N.Y.) took the loss for Old
Westbury. Ciccarelli allowed seven hits in six innings,
surrendering five runs (4 earned) with two walks.
Rams in the circle: Behind Hope Zino,
Farmingdale State controlled the game. Zino handcuffed the
Panthers in a complete game outing, giving up just two hits and one
walk while striking out seven to move her team to the Championship.
Game Notes: Farmingdale State outhit Old
Westbury, 7-2, including 5-0 in extra base hits. On the base
path, Old Westbury stranded three runners while Farmingdale State
stole two bags and left five on base. Defensively, Old
Westbury committed two errors and Farmingdale State had one.
In the circle, Old Westbury issued a pair of walks compared to
Farmingdale State, which struck out seven and handed out one free
pass.
