PANTHERS CHALLENGE, BUT FALL 2-0 TO CENTENARY

SEPTEMBER 1, 2009

Old Westbury vs. Centenary Boxscore

OLD WESTBURY, N.Y.-The SUNY College at Old Westbury women's soccer team dropped a heartbreaking, 2-0 decision against the Cyclones of Centenary College Tuesday afternoon in its season opener at Panther Park.

Centenary came out aggressive to start the match, recording three shots in the first ten minutes, but sophomore goalkeeper Jennifer Kupfer (Bellmore, N.Y) and the defense was equal to the task by keeping the Cyclones off the board.   Twelve minutes later the Cyclones offense tested Panther goalkeeper, Kupfer, as freshman Caroline Mountney (Flourtown, Pa.) found the back of the net by beating Kupfer to the lower right corner to open the Centenary scoring account in 2009.  It wasn't until the 88:59 mark when Centenary added an insurance goal as junior Jazmine (Newton, N.J.) Farrell tapped in a goal off a rebound to give Centenary a 2-0 advantage.

Kupfer played all 90 minutes in goal and tallied nine saves while Centenary's junior Ashley Denti (Sergentsville, N.J.) posted a three save shutout.

Sophomore Cassandra Esposito (Valley Stream, N.Y.) led the way for Old Westbury's offense, registering two shots on target while senior Marie LaMaida (New Hyde Park, N.Y.) added one.

Old Westbury's underclassmen were impressive in the season opener, as three freshman and two sophomores were named to the starting 11.  In addition, one freshman also came on as a substitute.

The Green and Ivory will return to action on Saturday, September 5th on the road for a non-conference match at Saint Elizabeth.  Kickoff is slated for 1 p.m. in Morristown, New Jersey.  Please visit www.oldwestburypanthers.com for more information on women's soccer or any of the other Panther athletic teams.
