www.oldwestburypanthers.com) – The SUNY College at Old Westbury women's basketball was unable to grab a second-half lead as Ramapo held on to an 76-72 victory over the visiting Panthers in the Roadrunner Tip-Off Championship Saturday in Mahwah, New Jersey. The loss moves OW to 1-1 on the season while the Roadrunners improve to 3-0.
OW got out of the gates quickly, jumping ahead 19-14 on three-ball from
Shannon Gilly with 10:41 remaining on the first-half clock. Ramapo countered with a 7-0 run over the next 2:20 to take a 21-19 lead. Ramapo outscored OW 14-9 over the final 8:21 to head to the locker room with a 33-28 half-time advantage. OW's freshmen backcourt of
Kim Weathers (12 points, 2 steals) and
Deslyn Applewhaite (7 points, 5 rebounds) paced the Panthers in the first-half while Ramapo was led by Faith Flannery and Lindsey Gripenburg, who each scored nine points apiece.
Ramapo used a 10-5 run to start the second half to jump out to a 43-33 lead with 15:03 remaining in the game. OW clawed back throughout the second-half but were unable to overcome the early 10-point deficit. With 51 seconds remaining, OW's
Alicia Matthias drained a three-pointer to cut the deficit down to three, 72-69. Ramapo countered with a jumper Gripenburg followed by Faith Flannery's jumper off a turnover by
Brittany Jones with 18 seconds to take a 76-69 lead.
Kim Weathers sank a three-pointer with three second left to cut the final score down to 76-72.
Kim Weathers led Old Westbury with 29 points, six rebounds and three steals in 40 minutes of action.
Deslyn Applewhaite followed with 19 points, nine rebounds (four offensive), three assists and two steals.
DeAndra Scott sparked the Panthers off bench to combine 12 points and 10 rebounds to notch her first career.
Ramapo registered four players in double-digits led by Faith Flannery's 23 points. Lindsey Gripenburg followed with 17 while Alexa Ryan and Danielle Beam tacked on 11 and 10, respectively.
Old Westbury found themselves on the wrong end of 52-45 rebounding disparity. OW snagged 15 steals while both teams committed 26 turnovers.
YESHIVA MACCABEES UP NEXT FOR THE PANTHERS: Old Westbury returns to the court on Tuesday (Nov. 30), taking on the Yeshiva Maccabees in their Skyline Conference opener in New York, New York. Tip-off is set for 8 p.m.
