www.oldwestburypanthers.com) – The SUNY College at Old Westbury men's basketball team took on the York Cardinals Sunday in the CUNYAC Coaches vs. Cancer Classic hosted by Lehman College at the APEX Center. The Panthers (2-5) were edged 66-64, by the Cardinals (3-8), who have now gone 4-1 against OW over the last seven years. Tonight was Old Westbury's final game of the 2010 calendar year and will return to action January 2 at the Franklin & Marshall Sponaugle New Years Tournament (Jan. 2-3) in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. OW tips against the host Diplomats (7-1) at 8 p.m. from Mayser Gymnasium.
After starting off 3-for-13 from the field, Old Westbury's
Hilton Sneed dropped in a layup to give the Panthers a 10-8 lead with 13:58 left. OW would lead York for the remainder of the half.
Jamal Little connected on one of his two triples on the day to put the Panthers up 18-11 with 9:30 on the clock. Little's trey sparked a 13-3 run that put OW up by 17 (31-14) on a pair of made free-throws by
Rudy Lys at the 5:10 mark. York responded with a 15-7 run to pull within nine points at the break.
York jumped out of the second-half gates and put together a 21-5 run to go up seven (50-43) with 10:17 remaining in regulation. Old Westbury clinging to a four-point lead with 1:19 remaining, York's Marcel Esonwune sank a pair of free-throws to knot the game at 64 with just 37 ticks left on the clock. OW's
Jamal Little missed a free-throw and William Holley countered with a layup to give the Cardinals a 66-64 lead with eight seconds left.
Tyquan Moore rebounded a missed three-pointer by
Scott Arias with two seconds on the clock, and then passed the ball over to
Jefferson Guillaume, who missed a jumper as time expired.
Frantz Granjean led Old Westbury with 21 points (9-17 FG) and also pulled down a team-high 10 rebounds with three assists and a block. This was Granjean's fourth consecutive game of registering 20 or more points.
Jamal Little followed with 13 points, six rebounds and three assists while
Lester Prosper's 11 points rounded out OW's double-digit scorers.
Tyquan Moore added seven rebounds and two steals off the bench.
Marcel Esonwune had a game-high 27 points, 16 rebounds (9 offensive) and three swats in 38 minutes of action to lead York. William Holley contributed 12 points and eight boards for the Cardinals.
OW finished the game shooting 32.8 percent from the floor (22-67 FG), while York connected on 40 percent of its field goal attempts (24-60). York held the advantage on the boards, 48-43, and drew even off the offensive glass 18-18.
