WOMEN’S HOOPS TOO MUCH FOR YORK

Kim Weathers hits for 28 points and Shannon Gilly grabs 16 board for OW’s third straight win

OLD WESTBURY, NY (www.oldwestburypanthers.com) – the SUNY College at Old Westbury women's basketball team won its third straight game when it handled the York Cardinals, 73-53, Saturday afternoon in non-conference action from the Clark Athletic Center. OW improved to 6-2 on the season while York slipped to 4-7.

Trailing by two points midway through the first-half, The Panthers went on a 23-13 run over the next 10:41 – fueled by 15 first-half points by Kim Weathers. The Wyandanch, New York native also added three steals in the opening frame. From that points, Old Westbury never looked back at took a 35-27 lead in to the break. OW doubled the advantage on a triple by DeAndra Scott with 7:09 remaining on the second-half clock that put the Panthers up 58-42.

Weathers has elevated her play all season and on Saturday she scored 28 points on 12-of-23 shooting from the field to go with six assists (tied career-high), five rebounds and four steals. She is averaging 25.2 points in four non-conference games this season. Brittany Jones and DeAndra Scott followed with 11 points each while Shannon Gilly pulled down 16 rebounds in 23 minutes of action. Gilly's 16 rebounds were the most she had totaled since pulling down 20 against Purchase on February 20, 2008. Nine different Panthers contributed to the scoring column. 

Three players scored in double-digits for the Cardinals, led by Kadisha Wickham's 14 points, 16 rebounds and four blocked shots. Joanna Josama also posted a double-double, combining 13 points and 10 rebounds while Elizabeth Padilla added 10 points. 

The Panthers shot 39.7 percent from the floor and hit 38.9 percent from beyond the arc while York connected on 28.8 percent from the field and 20 percent from long range. In all, the Panthers held a 54-40 advantage on the boards – including a 21-14 edge on the offensive end, leading to 28 second chance points. The Panthers also owned the paint, outscoring their opponent 42-24. Both teams drew even in turnovers at 23 all. 

ST. JOSEPH'S-BROOKLYN GOLDEN BEARS UP NEXT FOR THE PANTHERS: Old Westbury returns to the court on Thursday (Dec. 23), taking on the St. Joseph's-Brooklyn Golden Bears in a non-conference showdown in Brooklyn, New York. Game time is set to tip at 7 p.m. from Brooklyn Technical High School.
